Homage to Belgian Resistance Against Nazis, Remarkable Wall Plate by d'hossche
About the Item
Designed and executed by Ernest d'Hossche, one of Belgium's leading Art Deco artisans in the 1930s and 40s, this very rare wall plate features a nude female figure holding an upright sword, symbolizing Belgium's resistance against the occupying Nazi forces over six years between 1940 and 1945. d'Hossche worked for many years at the Boch ceramic company, which employed hundreds of workers at its two locations -- La Louvière (Keramis) and Tournai (Boch Freres) -- in this case creating a piece fired and glazed at La Louvière. Later he went on to serve as head designer for the firm, producing many superb pieces, including the new time series of dishes premiered at the Brussels World's fair in 1958, the first fair of its kind after World War II. The piece is fully marked and signed on the reverse.

Made only two years after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes was held in Paris, which gave the Art Deco style its name many years later, the theme of this charger -- and its stylized, elongated nudes...Category
