Josef Presser (1907-1967) pastel and charcoal Portrait of a Woman on paper. Circa 1950. Presser uses an expressive hand and renders a 3/4 a striking 3/4 close up portrait. The approximate site dimensions are 9.5" wide x 13" high. Signed lower right. The framing treatment consists of a silver leaf wood molding, matted and the piece is under glass. Good overall condition. The piece has not been viewed out of the frame. The work is in good condition with no visible rips, tears or restorations. There is some light staining and foxing on the matte and doesn't look to affect the work on paper. The frame has some light wear to the silver leaf. Re-framing is suggested. The backing and matte are not acid free or archival. Overall approximate dimensions with the frame are 21.25" wide x 25.25" high. AskArt Bio: Josef Presser was born in Lublin, Poland. He studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, in Europe, and with Bryant Baker, Henry Hunt Clark, Philip Hale, and William James. He was a member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Club and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club and exhibited at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. His work is in many museum collections, both here and abroad, including the Uffizi, Florence, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Philadelphia.

In 1916, his father emigrated from the Ukraine to New York where he met his Polish wife. Trained in New York City and Paris, Albert attended the Art Students League for three and a half years, and his most influential teacher was Frank Mason. He discovered his great love was painting outdoors, especially old woods and streams in the Catskill Mountains. A 1980 trip to Santa Fe was life-changing, and he moved there in the mid-80s, trading the subject matter of dark woods for brilliant colored landscape.
