19Th Century, Pair of French Paintings with Still Lifes in Landscape
About the Item
Jules Alexandre Gamba De Preydour (1846 - 1931)
Pair of paintings depicting still lifes of flowers and fruit with landscape
signed lower left and dated 1891
The pair of paintings depicting two still lifes set in a garden were made in oil on canvas by the French painter Jules Alexandre Gamba De Preydour (1846 - 1931) in 1891, as evidenced by the signature and date present in each of the paintings in the lower left.
The canvas presented here on the left illustrates a fraction of stone architecture, with a wall and steps on which is placed an upturned wicker basket decorated with vines and grapes and pomegranates. A bunch of black grapes appears to have fallen to the ground and some leaves seem to have flown away, as if the painter had wanted to seize a moment of a sunny early autumn day. Above the wall a vine plant climbs offering its fruits, while at the bottom of the ivy wraps a wall of architecture. Behind the wall, which serves as a backdrop to an open space that clears in the distance, a large meadow ends at the foot of a rocky mountain.
The canvas on the right illustrates a stone wall with a balcony, overlooking a gulf, on which a stone seat is placed a composition of fruit, with peaches, a melon, pears and grapes and a vine plant. On the ground a wicker basket is filled with green and black figs, apparently freshly picked. A peach and a pomegranate are rolled next to a watering can in glazed terracotta. Ivy and a large pink oleander surround the left profile, again creating a fifth towards the landscape described in the background.
The coast, washed by the sea, is characterized by high mountains that gently descend towards the shore, drawing a gulf. The sky, slightly veiled, contributes to the rendering of that typical color of late summer days.
The author of the canvases, signed A. Gamba de Preydour, is a French painter active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Alexandre Scipion Gamba, known as Alexandre Gamba de Preydour, was born in Paris on 10 October 1846 and died in Nice on 20 January 1933. He studied drawing at the École des Frères de la Doctrine Chrétienne. In 1866, he was noticed by Jean-Léon Gérôme in a drawing competition organized by the schools of the city of Paris, of which he won the first prize. He became his student and continued his training in the workshop of the master until 1870. Very soon, large Parisian galleries such as Goupil or Knodler ordered him easel works, preferring still lifes of flowers, in which he specialized, but also genre scenes and portraits.
Alexandre Scipion Gamba married in 1873 and at that time added «de Preydour» to his patronymic. He then moved to Nice, first to his father-in-law’s house, then to rue de la Paix after his wife’s untimely death in 1875. He married a young Italian noblewoman in 1884.
The paintings presented here confirm the stylistic and chromatic choices that the author proposed in his works, and are therefore added to the catalog of certain works of the artist, becoming an important historical and artistic document useful to the best knowledge of this author.
Very pleasant and decorative, they can be exposed next to each other or placed in different environments or walls. The large size allows the works to be interpreted as windows towards the gardens described, giving brightness and airiness to the environment that will host them.
