Aboriginal Painting 'Kuluma in Tiwi Islands' by Nina Puruntatameri (1971-)
About the Item
This exceptional painting by Nina Puruntatameri represents the ancestral motifs of a fertility rite called Kulama in the Tiwi Islands. According to the tradition, the Kulama ceremony is performed in the late wet season (March-April) when a ring appears around the moon. More specifically, Kulama is a traditional initiation for young men which coincides with the harvest of a certain wild yam species. Elders of both sexes sing and dance for three days welcoming the boys into adulthood. The boy is then renamed with his true man’s name.
Nina Puruntatameri was born in 1971 and grew up in Paru on Melville Island, the larger of the Tiwi Islands. She lives and works at Pirlangimpi, Melville Island where she is a longtime member of Munupi Arts & Crafts Association. Puruntatameri was taught to paint by her father Romuald Puruntatameri, a celebrated Tiwi artist and senior culture man. Primarily a painter, Nina Puruntatameri also works across a range of other mediums including batik, tunga (bark), stoneware/ceramics and printmaking. She has been painting since the early 1990s, and her works are already featured in major museums and collections. She is also a recipient of numerous important awards in the domain of art.
