"Acrobat and Circus Horse, " Vivid WPA-Era Painting with Semi-Nude Performer

About the Item

In an era when the circus provided an affordable and exotic form of entertainment for the Everyman, this vivid painting, glowing with the colors of red clay, slate and dusty pink, captures the moment with an acrobat is about to mount his horse. The plume atop the horse's head, and the hint of canvas and curtains behind the figures, give a sense of the circus environment. The painter, William Schulhoff, was a Romanian-American painter who settled in Philadelphia as a youth and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before exhibiting in Philadelphia, New York and Paris, among other cities. His works are in the collections of the Academy, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Phillips Memorial Gallery in Washington, D.C. The painting is oil on canvas (dimensions include the frame).
