The Aurora, after Guido Reni, 19th Century

About the Item

Wonderful 19th century copy of Guido Reni's masterpiece, The Aurora, a large Baroque ceiling fresco painted in 1614 for the Casino, or garden house, adjacent to the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi, in Rome. The work is considered Reni's masterpiece. Here we see Aurora, the goddess of dawn, leading Apollo, the sun god, across the sky. Apollo flies in his chariot surrounded by dancing figures representing the Hours, while above flies the winged Phosphorus, who represents the morning star. This lovely copy is stunningly rendered in vibrant colours and has a wonderful patina and craquelure throughout. Originally part of a trumeau mirror, the canvas has been relined and newly framed. Some small areas of previous retouching mildly visible. Framed in a new and substantial gilt frame work egg and dart motif.
