Period Portrait of a Young Noblewoman by Vincenzo Volpe

About the Item

Wonderful portrait of a young noblewoman signed by the great Italian artist Vincenzo Volpe in lavish costume communicates her social status. Oil on board The very elegant posture of this young noblewoman seated in three-quarters make this painting a small masterpiece. The firm and harmonious brushwork brings to mind the best works of Giovanni Boldini with his irresistibly posed ladies. Signed at lower right V. Volpe. The great importance and prestigious provenance of this wonderful work, is attested by the artist's name engraved on its beautiful Coeval gilt frame. This painting, never before on the market, comes from an important private collection and is beautified by an impressive antique frame in gilded wood, in almost perfect condition with the artist's name engraved on it. Every item of our Gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Sabrina Egidi official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts. Vincenzo Volpe (December 1855 – February 1929) was an Italian painter. From 1874 to 1890, he painted mostly genre scenes. From 1891 to 1896, he concentrated on religious art, then returned to genre works and portraits. He was born in Grottaminarda, Campania. His family moved to Naples when he was eight, and in 1871 he enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti there and studied with Domenico Morelli. In 1877 in Naples, he exhibited a painting titled A peaceful interruption; in 1883 in Milan he exhibited Orazione and 'Accordo difficile. He submitted four paintings the same year in Rome, including Canzone allegra, which depicts an old man squatting on a stool, playing guitar and singing to a bed-ridden convalescent girl. In 1884 in Turin, he exhibited Nello studio; in 1887 in Venice: Una partita d'onore and Lezione di musica. At the 1891 Exposizione Triennale of the Brera Academy, he exhibited Una vecchia canzone. He also did restorative work; notably the frescoes at the Sanctuary of Montevergine near Mercogliano. In 1900, he was invited to the Royal Palace to do a portrait of King Umberto I. Two years later, he became a Professor at the Accademia and held that position until his death in Naples in 1929. From 1915 to 1925, he served as the Accademia's President. One of his best-known pupils was Giulia Masucci Fava. Dimensions of the painting without frame cm. 19 x 6.5. This artwork is shipped from Rome. • George Lance Period Signed Picture Portrait
    By George Lance

Beautiful oil on canvas painting depicting a young noblewoman sitting outdoors with a bouquet of flowers in her hand and a cage on the ground, by the great English artist George Lance This painting, never before on the market, comes from a private collection and is beautified by an impressive antique frame in gilded wood, in almost perfect condition. Every item of our Gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Sabrina Egidi official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts. George Lance (24 March 1802 – 18 June 1864) was an English painter of still life and portrait miniatures. Lance was born at the old manor-house in Little Easton in Essex. His father was William Lance who had previously served in a regiment of light horse and was at the time of Lance's birth an adjutant in the Essex yeomanry; he later became the inspector of the Bow Street horse-patrol. His mother, Louisa Lucy (née) Constable, with whom his father had eloped from boarding-school, was the daughter of Colonel Constable of Beverley in Yorkshire. Although Lance showed a predilection for art at a very early age, he was placed, while not yet fourteen, in a factory in Leeds. However, the work injured his health and he returned to London. Wandering one day into the British Museum, he casually started a conversation with Charles Landseer, who happened to be drawing there. On learning that Landseer was a pupil of Benjamin Haydon, he went early next morning to that painter's residence, and asked to become a pupil. Haydon replied that if his drawings promised future success he would instruct him for nothing. Not many days later Lance, still not yet fourteen, entered Haydon's studio, and remained there for seven years, at the same time studying in the schools of the Royal Academy. While designing a picture inspired by Homer's Iliad, he decided, before putting on the colours, to paint some fruit and vegetables as practice. This work attracted the notice of Sir George Beaumont, who purchased it, and this success led him to paint another fruit-piece, which he sold to the Earl of Shaftesbury. He then painted two fruit-pieces for the Duke of Bedford...
