About the Item
A magnificent Welsh 18th century oil on canvas painting by Richard Wilson. The painting is framed within a striking and richly carved giltwood border with fine foliate designs and intricately carved palmettes in a satin and burnished finish. The wonderfully executed oil on canvas painting depicts a charming landscape of the Italian country side with a village at the top of a hill and a magnificent waterfall. At the forefront are figures sitting by the river with tall ruins at the left. The lovely hills extend into the background where they are met by the beautiful blue sky. The plaque below reads "1714 - Richard Wilson - 1782. Classic Italy", with the dates indicating the date of birth and death of the artist.
Richard Wilson (1 August 1714 - 15 May 1782) Was an influential Welsh landscape painter. With George Lambert he is recognized as a pioneer in British art of landscape for its own sake and was described in the Welsh Academy Encyclopedia of Wales as the "most distinguished painter Wales has ever produced and the first to appreciate the aesthetic possibilities of his country". In December 1768 Wilson became one of the founder-members of the Royal Academy.
