Lait Pur Sterilise - Vintage Art Nouveau Lithograph Poster by T.A. Steinlen
About the Item
Vintage limited edition lithographic reproduction poster of "Lait Pur Sterilise de la Vingeanne" by T.A. Steinlen, featuring a girl drinking milk from a bowl surrounded by cats. Published in 1968 by The Sunday Times (London), it is offered with the original matt presentation frame.
This limited-edition poster is numbered 600/2000 in pencil and has the Sunday Times blind stamp (ST Limited Edition) in the lower right corner. It also includes printed text from the original Maîtres de l'Affiche lithograph in Paris, visible along the left of the page.
This poster, advertising 'pure, sterilized milk from Vingeanne, ', presents the viewer with a wholesome image of a young girl (the artist's daughter) perched on a chair, drinking from a bowl of milk with both hands. Three cats crowd around her feet, their mouths open as if miaowing plaintively. Since his childhood, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen had shown an aptitude for depicting cats, frequently making them the focal point of his works. A caricature of Steinlen, published in 1898, shows a wave of animals threatening to completely engulf the artist, with a giant cat at his left shoulder.
Steinlen was born in Lausanne in 1859 and, after arriving in Paris in 1881, soon became a member of the artistic community in Montmartre, of which Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Adolphe Willette were also members. Steinlen and Toulouse-Lautrec depicted several of the same subjects in their work, but it was the Swiss artist who enjoyed greater fame during the artists' lifetimes, no doubt due to his ability to undertake more commercial work, such as this poster for Vingeanne milk, which reached a greater audience than Toulouse-Lautrec's controversial graphic work.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen
Theophile Alexandre Steinlen was born in Lausanne in 1859. He was naturalized French in 1901. He was a painter, engraver, illustrator, poster artist and sculptor. Before settling in Paris, he made a detour to Mulhouse where one of his uncles placed him in the studio of one of the best lithographers of the time. He settled definitively in Montmartre in 1881. Willette introduced him to his companions of the Cabaret du Chat-Noir animated by Rodolphe Salis. He met Toulouse-Lautrec, Forain, Léandre, Debussy, Eric Satie, Verlaine, Alphonse Allais and Aristide Bruant. He took part in the performances of the famous cabaret's shadow theater with animal stories and, most often, sequences featuring cats, for which he has a particular affection. The felines will appear throughout his activity as "parentheses" in a tormented work. There is, in this torment, the expression of no personal problem but a painful compassion for the lives of the exploited and marginal beings. He painted and drew idylls, balls and bastrings, workers, kids and gosselin, the poor, the little workers, girls and marlous. He sometimes made posters. In the most successful of them (« Le lait pur de la Vingeanne » et le « Fer Bravais ») he imposed, relevant or not, the presence of cats.
In 1901, Steinlen worked for L'Assiette au beurre , the most virulent satirical newspaper ever published and takes readily to target the institutions of the 3rd Republic.
His works are found in numerous Public Collections, such as Petit Palais in Geneva, Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
