Paul Delvaux is one of the greatest contemporary Belgian painters. His artistic fascination with naked women was matched only by his love of trains. Often, he crossed these two influences in his paintings. Paul Delvaux was fascinated by the railway universe.
In the sixties, he mastered the art of creating a “climate”, as he put it, a mysterious, contemplative atmosphere, despite the realism with which he painted. His characters seen from behind encourage us to look, to engage with them, they bring us into the picture. The whimsical interplay of lights and shadows, the highly structured composition, everything gives us the impression of being on the threshold of another world, of an elsewhere which you can only reach by entering the station. , than by getting on the train, leaving behind us the everyday world.

Paul Delvaux
Paul Delvaux was born in 1897 in Belgium. He was one of the leading exponents of Surrealism, as well as one of the most popular painters of all time. He is famous for his female portraits located into mysterious surreal interiors and landscapes. In 1965, Delvaux was encouraged by Mira Jacob, a private collector of Symbolist and Surrealist paintings, to begin making lithographs. Later in 1976, Jacob published her book Paul Delvaux: Graphic Work, for which the Belgian artist produced many engravings, some of which are dry-points. Delvaux died in 1994.
