Firstlight

About the Item

"First Light" captures the moment of waking at dawn, the dim light distorts and disintegrates ones environment, feelings of disorientation and seclusion arise and it is this almost dreamlike, blurred vision that the artist wanted to convey. This tapestry is woven using a thick textured woollen weft, blue, red and grey yarn are combined to create a framed window into the distorted and pixellated vision within, the centre is woven in white and various shades of grey intertwined in various directions. This piece is one of 6 tapestries inspired by the Night Sky, each tapestry in the series depicts a different time and aspect of the night or early morning. It is hand dyed and hand woven by the artist in her studio near the Thames Barrier in Woolwich. It is made of 100% British wool with a cotton warp, the wool has been specially spun in Yorkshire. Changes in light, time and landscape and our emotional responses to it are the focus of Randall's work, she is interested in our thoughts about darkness and light and these 6 tapestries explore the texture and quality of darkness and the disorientation and seclusion that nightime brings, where shadows and moonlight emphasise our feelings and alter our perceptions. Each tapestry in the series is a different weight and texture to highlight the qualities of that particular time.
