Pair of Mid-19th Century French Handwoven Floral Aubusson Wall Hanging Portieres

About the Item

These antique wall hanging tapestries were handwoven in France, circa 1860. Called "Portiere", each tapestry in a pastel beige, pink, green, and blue palette, features a central bouquet of flowers in a decorative jardiniere with eagle legs, surrounded by floral and leaf motifs throughout. The detailed, decorative wall hanging tapestries are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorn soft colors; they are further dressed with a new canvas backing for stability. Portiere tapestries are tall slim wall-hangings which hung on either side of elegant doors of French chateaux and palaces in past centuries, they are unique in that they are designed to fill narrow wall spaces. Very versatile, they could be hang on both sides of a window or door, in a hallway, or even on top of a landing or staircase! Measure: 45.5"W x 107"H.
