A Carved Teak Wood Lotus Flower Ceiling Panel 3'x3'

About the Item

This is a meticulous recreation of an antique Thai temple ceiling panel. Northern Thai temples often had intricately carved wooden ceilings made up of coffered panels with carved and gilded lotus flowers in their centers. The overall effect was of a series of ornate circles within squares. The design is called "Thamachak," which symbolizes the Buddhist belief in the great wheel of life and reincarnation. The opened lotus flower in the center is the Buddhist symbol of purity. This carving is made from 3 individual segments that hang together on a wall cleat. It is hand-carved with great delicacy from reclaimed Teak, stained with printer’s ink and bleached in the sun to produce an aged appearance. Being naturally resistant to water and insects, it can be displayed indoors or outdoors.

  • Carved Teak Indian Temple Column
    Located in Chicago, IL
This monumental Indian column once supported part of the entrance or courtyard cloister in a grand mansion. Originally part of a series, this individual column is all that remains. The piece comes in multiple stacked segments, distributing the weight of the original structure from its floral motif capital through its stone plinth. Only one is available. Origin: Rajasthan, India, 19th century. During the colonial period, Indian traders amassed huge fortunes and some of that wealth found its way into mansions and palaces. A hundred or more years later, many (if not most) of these structures are obsolete or the fortunes of their owners have dwindled. Many are in urban areas in which land is very valuable now and aggressively sought for multi-storey buildings. Old single-storey mansions are often disassembled piece-by piece and the parts sold on the international market. India is one of very few countries that have the labor supply to decommission old structures in this meticulous way. The column could be used in an architectural, load-bearing way or as a free-standing decoration...

This unique teak carved panel depicts Dayak Tribal mythology. The Dayak people are some hundreds of various native groups found in the interior rainforests of Borneo. This carving depicts the tree of life, which the Dayak people believe exists on “Linden Tarung”, a mythical rock island where they believe humans first came to existence. “Linden Tarung” is the ancient and ancestral home of the Dayak peoples. It is this tree of life that reminds the Dayak people not to get too attached to worldly possessions. The tree of life also symbolizes heaven, earth and the underworld. The top of tree features hornbills that are the symbol of heaven. The middle represents the present earth and bottom of the tree the underworld. To achieve such detail & depth required immense patience, craftsmanship and many months by a skilled artisan to complete. The medium for this carving was an antique teak door...
