A jewelled and gilt bangle in the Moghul style, Kenneth Jay Lane, USA, 1970s

About the Item

A beautiful jewelled bangle, in emerald glass cabuchons, clear paste and paste pearl cabuchons, in the style of Moghul jewellery, sparkling and eye catching. With a firm 'snap clasp' an easy to wear jewel, reminiscent of the 'Swans' and New York style and glamour, of which Kenneth Jay Lane was a part and facilitator. Kenneth Jay Lane was born 1932 in Detroit. He worked as a shoe designer for Christian Dior in New York, under Roger Vivier, before setting up ’ K.J.L.’, his vastly successful costume jewellery empire in 1963. His patronage by Diana Vreeland at Vogue soon brought him to the attention of Royalty and Hollywood alike, with the Duchess of Windsor being an avid collector and friend. Babe Paley, Jacqueline Onassis and many smart Manhattan personalities sported his jewellery, all circles in which he himself enjoyed circulating, often accompanying these celebrities to numerous engagements! –these pieces were immediately glamorous and striking! There is a great playfulness and diversity to his designs - his style is bright and eclectic, imitating themes as diverse as Moghul and Art Deco styles, including many ethnic and cultural styles in between. His most distinct pieces come from the days of the 1960's (jewels marked 'K.J.L.') until the late 1970's (jewels marked 'K.J.L.'). He then used his full name on his signed pieces, and started a more mass appeal collection. Latterly he enjoyed huge success on the QVC channel. Kenneth Jay Lane sadly passed away in 2018.
