Antique Georgian Mourning Pearl Snake Brooch with Window, circa 1800 – 1830

About the Item

An exquisite antique Georgian mourning brooch from the early 1800s featuring a bean-shaped window in the centre, with blue silk backing that would have traditionally held a lock of hair belonging to a deceased loved one so that a piece of them was always kept close to the wearer’s heart. The window is encircled by a serpent with a green paste eye, depicted swallowing its tail which was a symbol of eternal love. This is further complemented by a row of natural seed pearls along the bottom, representing tears. It's fashioned in 18ct gold and has been inscribed with a memorial inscription on the back during the early 1900s that reads, “Sid: 1884 – 1905”. It was clearly very beloved and has been beautifully preserved over the centuries and deserves to be treasured once more.
