The Details...
This brooch is constructed from silver - it is stamped '935' on the reverse. The brooch was made in France and is marked 'DÉPOSE' on the reverse too. It features a typical Art Nouveau design and is set with small, round, colourless paste stones. At the brooch's centre is a round, emerald green paste stone and suspended from the base of the brooch is a lustrous, round faux pearl. The brooch is detailed with two stylised lotus flowers suggesting the influence of the Egyptian Revivalism of c.1900. These flower motifs are enhanced with blue Plique-á-Jour enamel. The fastening pin is fitted to the brooch with a tube hinge and the brooch secures with a 'C' clasp. The brooch measures 3cm x 2.75cm.
A Short History...
Enamelling is a technique closely associated with the jewellery of the Art Nouveau era. The Plique à Jour form of enamel work was particularly prevalent at the time. A French term - it translates as “letting in the daylight”. Working similar to a stained glass window, Plique à Jour work has a metal outline filled with various coloured and transparent, glass-like enamels. Plique-à-jour provides a natural translucency, similar to that found in nature, which made it ideal for rendering the leaves, flowers, insect wings that were popular motifs of the Art Nouveau period.
