Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Micromosaic Brooch
About the Item
This charming Victorian-era micromosaic brooch is a wonder of meticulous craftsmanship and intricate design. Depicting a friendly Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, it is designed after a micromosaic plaque by Antonio Aguatti that now resides in the Victoria & Albert collection. This image was a popular one among micromosaic artists of the 19th century. For Victorians, the image of the dog represented love and fidelity, making brooches like this appropriate gifts for romantic partners. Set in 18K yellow gold.
Micromosaic jewelry reached the height of fashion during the 19th century when affluent Europeans making their Grand Tour throughout the continent brought these pieces back as souvenirs of their journey. Mainly crafted in the Vatican workshops in Italy, these pieces were works of skillful craftsmanship and are highly coveted by collectors today.
