Lady Profile Massive Cameo Brooch
About the Item
We are thrilled to offer this elaborate Lady Profile / Portrait Massive Cameo Brooch. Cameos date back as far as 15,000 B.C., descended from petroglyphs in stone, used to record significant events as well as for communication. Cameos originated in Alexandria, Egypt, but owe their sole origins to ancient carving traditions. Most popular in the 1950s, when cameos were highly sought after by tourists of Europe. The more elaborate cameos, such as this one, are attributed to the more prominent ancient Romans, appealed to the more wealthy ancient Romans & Greeks. Mainly used for ornamental purposes in drapery fabric such as scarfs, sashes, fabric belts, etc. This particular Roman cameo leans more towards the Renaissance period of the 15th & 16th century.
This museum-quality detailed carving would surely compete with the Gonzaga Cameo located in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
In a substantial size, as well as an excellent symmetry factor, considering it was cut from a single piece of conch shell. With an excellent color contrast as well. With a size to be stored in a shadow box frame, when not worn .. [Shadow box frame of your choice included in purchase if desired – Inquire for details] .. Most Cameos of this massive size today are only found in museums.
Actual Cameo measures approximately 1.90" x 1.70", securely Bezel set. Frame accented with intricate Hand Engraving as well as Hand Repoussé throughout. Constructed completely of 10 Karat Yellow Gold [electronically tested for metal purity] with the exception of the German Nickel Silver pin. This particular design is attributed to the Roman / Greek revival period, combining the characteristics of both into one.
In exceptional condition considering its age, clearly treasured & well cared for throughout the centuries.
We offer an impeccable presentation, as well as gift-wrap of your choice, with this purchase. We invite all inquiries!
