Antique 15 Karat Double Fetter and Love knot Link Watch Chain, 51”

About the Item

15K Victorian fetter link chain with a link design consisting of two "paperclips" joined together at a 90 degree angle (called a double fetter link) combined w an unusual lovers knot link where the lover's knot is wrapped in a braided pattern several times about a simple oval link (see close ups). Fetter links are larger links and were used to (somewhat) cut down on the labor intensive work of hand forging many smaller links, as chains were hand forged well into the 19th century and beyond the industrial revolution. Both the paper clip and the lover's knot links are Victorian motifs which convey love and devotion. The chain is substantial at 36.3 grams and at 51 inches can be worn doubled or tripled. There is a nicely scaled dog clip and a jump ring attached from which to attach a chunky fob or pendant or two. Or, this lovely chain can simply stand alone. Our chain weighs 36.3 grams. The fob shown attached to the chain is available separately on First Dibs under C1855 Regency style Chalcedony Intaglio Fob.

  • Chunky 9ct Double Fetter and Triple Love Knot Albert Chain, 18 inches
    Located in Baltimore, MD
Each double fetter link on our 18” chunky Victorian albert chain is connected to 3 love knot links with the pattern repeats eight times. The T-bar and dog clips are stamped 9 carat. Alberts are named for Prince Albert who popularized the wearing of a vest with pocket watch and a fob on a chain, the watch in the vest pocket, with fob and T-Bar dangling. Our chain combines the fetter link and love knot link. Longer links like the fetter link were used to cut down on the laborious process of making and assembling many smaller links. We love the double fetter link and triple love knot combination which continues the pattern to the top of the chain with two matching dog clips, which serve as clasps for easily connection and removal. We also love the beefiness of the double fetter links and the love knots as compared to the slim links of most albert chains. The final image shows how our chunky Albert looks next to our 15 carat albert chain...

  • Victorian 9 Karat Love Knot Long Guard Watch Chain
    Located in Baltimore, MD
Our Victorian ladies long guard watch chain is composed of an unusual and attractive love knot link. Such chains were called "long guards", and shortened to "guard chains". Watch guard link chains were generally light in weight and always over 50 inches in length. They were designed to hold watches and were originally worn with the chain tucked into a woman's belt with the watch attached to the chain. A great deal of hand work was involved in their construction. This chain has a slightly more yellow tinge as compared to other 9K and even some 15K watch chains. The love knot chain...
