Extraordinary Rare Large (20") Charles Catteau (1880-1966) Art Deco Plate

About the Item

A Rare Large (20") Charles Catteau (1880-1966) Art Deco Plate, Boch Freres Keramis, D1847 - Belgium This is indeed an impressive and rare example of Charles Catteau (1880-1966) and Boch Frères Keramis (Co.) at their best. This stunning example of a matt enamel-on-earthenware Art Deco plate was probably made in the 'atelier de fantasie' workshop at the Boch Freres Keramis factory (almost certainly) between 1926 - 1934. The hand-painted floral design is one of Charles Catteau (D1847) and is known as 'Polychrome design with floral motifs', typically found on Catteau's Art Deco vases. It is unusual to see this extraordinary design on a ceramic plate of this magnitude. This is a large Art Deco plate standing quite tall at 50 cm (nearly 20") and is in excellent condition. A nice feature of this particular large plate is its intricate flower decoration and foliage in vibrant colours and forms, in shades of green, brown, bronze and gold. "An Abstraction of Nature" using careful application of decoration. Boch Frères Keramis dominated the Belgian market in the late 19th Century, but it would see particular success in the first half of the 20th Century with the arrival of Catteau, whose developments of form, technique and decoration transformed ceramics into an exceptional class of Art Deco wares. The company's name, "Keramis," was derived from keramos, the ancient Greek word for pottery. Boch Frères Keramis was founded in 1841 by Eugène and Victor Boch and their brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Nothomb, in La Louviere, Belgium. In 1906, French ceramicist Charles Catteau joined the company as artistic director, a position he held for 42 years. His signature Art Deco designs were influenced by Japonisme, Cubism, the abstraction of nature, and some even reflect African art's simplistic beauty. Catteau was ultimately responsible for the company's transition from producing utilitarian objects to esteemed works of art. ------------------------------ Condition Report: Excellent (with small hairline as depicted). 50 cm (H) x 50 cm (D). ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Provenance: Part of a private collection in Belgium. ------------------------------

Incredibly Rare & Exquisite Singing-Bird Box Inspired by Charles Bruguier Inlaid with Gold, Mother-of-Pearl and Enamel 為珍珠、珍珠母和琺瑯鑲嵌的歌鳥盒 For nearly two centuries, miniature singing bird boxes have captivated collectors around the world. With masterpieces being produced by French, German, and Swiss artisans, these delicate and intricately ornate boxes combine the simple eloquence of technological machinery with fantastic artistry. This particular offering is directly inspired by famed Swiss craftsman Charles Bruguier, produced in a rich and vibrant tortoiseshell fascia. The ornate flower petals and nature motif is offset by the vibrant colors and underlying miniaturized bird with an ivory beak and natural feathers. When wound, the front slide opens the bird lid and activates the movement and song of the finely crafted mechanical device. The detailing of the machinery is remarkable, while the pastoral scene adds a sense of old-world charm to any collection. These were highly sought-after pieces of art by nobles and royalty alike as the utility of automata was still in vogue during the 19th century. Charles Bruguier only crafted 27 singing bird boxes a year from his small studio. Although we cannot verify the origin of this particular piece, the matching artwork...
