Bulgari Diamond Trombino Ring, Italian, circa 1963
About the Item
Bulgari
Greek silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris arrived in Rome in 1881 and set up his own shop there in 1884, calling it Bulgari, an Italianization of his last name (in the brand's logo, it's styled BVLGARI, using the classical Latin alphabet in a nod to ancient Roman culture). In 1905, he opened the company’s flagship boutique on Rome’s Via dei Condotti. Since then, Bulgari has looked to Rome as a source of reference for its fanciful and decidedly romantic designs for necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other accessories.
Although the iconic jewelry house found success with its silverwork and Art Deco designs, popular through the 1920s, Bulgari’s signature style — bold, often using yellow gold embellished with big colorful gemstones — began to emerge when Sotirios’s sons inherited the business, in 1932.
The brand truly hit its stride in the dolce vita era of the 1950s and ’60s, when the founder’s grandsons Paolo, Gianni and Nicola Bulgari decisively departed from demure traditional styles to develop the house’s exuberant multi-gem looks, attracting celebrity collectors like Elizabeth Taylor.
In the 1940s, Bulgari debuted perhaps its most famous design, the Serpenti bracelet watch. The piece’s snakelike coils were made possible by the tubogas jewelry technique, which links a flexible series of thin horizontal bands. Both the sleek, modern tubogas construction and the sinuous snake motif continue to be synonymous with the Bulgari brand.
On 1stDibs, the collection of vintage Bulgari jewelry includes rings, pendant necklaces, watches and other accessories.

- Vintage Bulgari Trombino Ring Sapphire Diamond Gold 18k Estate JewelryBy BulgariLocated in Beverly Hills, CAAn iconic Bulgari Trombino ring made of 18k gold, featuring sapphire and diamond. The Trombino ring is one of the most recognizable among Bulgari’s designs. The name derives from the Italian word for "little trumpet," reflecting the ring's unique shape, which resembles the mouthpiece of a trumpet. The design of the Trombino ring was first introduced by Bulgari in the 1930s. Typically, the Trombino ring features a center gemstone surrounded by smaller accent stones. As to this particular ring, the center stone is a gorgeous four-prong set cabochon sapphire. The broad shank is encrusted with round cut diamonds and a row of horizontally graduated baguette cut diamonds. The stones taper down from the central gemstone. This design creates a perfect placement for the sapphire. Over the years, the Trombino ring has become a symbol of luxury and glamour. The cabochon’s bombe shape resembles Rome's domed rooftops. This statement piece with the vivid colored gem is a hallmark of Bulgari style. This classy vintage ring is made of 18 karat yellow gold, cabochon sapphire and round diamonds. The sapphire measures 10.79 x 8.49 x 5.70 mm and weighs 4.92 carats (engraved inside the shank). The diamonds are round brilliant cut and baguette cut (F-G color, VS clarity, total weight approximately 2.0 carats). The ring top measures 5/8" x 1/2" x 3/8" (1.8 x 1.3 x 0.8 cm). The Trombino ring weighs 8.8 grams. The vintage Trombino ring is stamped with Bvlgari maker's mark, sapphire carat weight, hallmark for 18 karat gold. The ring is size 5.75 - 6. It is not re-sizable, but can be sized a little bit close to its original size.
