Antique Marquise Shaped Gold, Enamel and Diamond Ring

About the Item

An unusual Georgian navette shaped ring that is a combination of a love ring and a mourning ring, mounted in 15K ring with a plaque of royal blue guilloche enamel surmounted with old cut diamonds set in a floral and leaf rosebud design. The shank of the ring is tapered. The stylized leaf form with young diamond buds harkens to the expression “nipped in the bud”, which describes the loss someone who dies too young in their prime. The ring's curved ergonomic shape matches the contour of the finger. The use of the navette shape has deep religious symbolism and is evocative of a boat that transports to the soul to heaven. The ring is unusual in that it is a mourning ring of a royal blue color that employs the language of floriography to assign meanings and symbolism to flowers, as a token of love or remembrance. The inscription on the reverse reads "died 2 August". Unfortunately the year and the name or initials of the young departed is unreadable. The ring is an early style mourning ring that evolved from the Georgian era. The ring is a size 5.5 and can be resized. The ring is 1 1/4 inch high and 3/4 inch wide.
