This George III piece is in good, antique, 190 year old condition!
This is a very old piece crafted in sterling silver with gold gilt to the inside.
Back in the day of King George III, the cities were growing and becoming dense with people, and a smelly problem began to arise! This ‘pong’ became so overwhelming that jewellers created the ‘vinaigrette’. A vinaigrette is a small filigree container used to hold a perfume-soaked sponge or piece of cotton. Vinaigrette jewellery was worn by ladies to mask unpleasant odours in their environment. They were quite small items that could be popped in a handbag or pocket, or strung on a necklace.
This example features lovely, foliate engraving on the front and bears the initials MCS. The back has a smaller version. There are hallmarks on inside of the lid and also on the base of the box indicating that it is Georgian silver from Birmingham and made in 1834 by John Lilly.
The piece is in very good antique condition, however, the hinge has broken which is reflected in the price. The lid snaps on tightly and securely. The box measures approximately 2.7mm long and 1.7mm wide and weighs 8.60grams.
