And Lia by LÉLIA PISSARRO (b. 1963) Acrylic and gold powder on canvas 100 x 70 cm (39 ¼ x 27 ½ inches) Signed lower left, Lélia Pissarro Titled on the reverse “And Lia”, signed Lélia Pissarro and inscribed IV-08 Corfton Literature Lélia Pissarro, The Colours of Silence, London, 2010, p. 68 (illustrated) This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the artist. Artist biography Lélia Pissarro was born in Paris on the 27th July 1963, the third and youngest child of the artist Hugues-Claude Pissarro and Katia, an art-dealer. From infancy until the age of eleven she was entrusted to the care of her grandparents, Paulémile Pissarro and his wife Yvonne, and her interest in drawing and painting was nurtured by Paulémile whilst living in Clécy, Normandy. Paulémile taught her the fundamental impressionist and post-impressionist techniques as had been taught to him by his father and his brothers, and so began her love for figurative art. She sold her first canvas to Wally Findlay, a New York art dealer, when she was only 4 years of age! Before his death, Paulémile made Lélia promise to retain her family name, to continue painting and to make art her life. At the age of 11 Lélia returned to Paris to live with her parents and it was then that she had her first exhibition at the "Salon de la Jeune Peinture" where she was, in all probability, the youngest ever exhibitor. Hugues-Claude, whose style veered towards conceptual art, took over from Paulémile as Lelia’s teacher and consequently she practiced drawing on a daily basis. At 15 she participated in an exhibition at the Luxembourg Museum in Paris and a year later, having excelled in a special examination, enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Tours. With her parents dividing their time between France and California, Lélia found herself moving between Tours, Paris and San Francisco. During this period she became dissatisfied with conceptual art and reverted to the family's traditional creative roots which distanced her from her avant-garde teachers. However, during the late 1980’s as the figurative style once again became fashionable, Lélia’s work found itself gaining in popularity. Whilst in Paris, Lélia taught art at the Moria School and studied oil painting restoration under Madame De Pangalleria at the laboratory of the Louvre and during this time had solo exhibitions in Paris, Lyon, Mulhouse and Rennes. Following her marriage in 1988 to David Stern, the London art dealer, she moved to London where her studio has become a meeting place for artists and friends and where conversation and tuition generate an exchange of opinions on drawings, pastels, watercolours, oil paintings and engravings. In 1999 Lélia became one of the founders of the “Sorteval Press”, a group of artists dedicated to developing their skills and techniques in etching and printmaking. Their first exhibition took place during December at the Mall Gallery in London and the artist’s efforts ensured a highly successful first exhibition. Balancing her role as artist and mother to three children, Lélia has successfully exhibited not only in London but also in Japan, South Africa, France Switzerland and Israel. In the United States Lélia's work has been shown in New York, Boston, Washington DC, Dallas, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Following the tradition of her great-grandfather Camille Pissarro, her grand-father Paulémile and her father Hugues-Claude, this fourth generation artist has played an important role by participating in the recent series of exhibitions entitled Pissarro – The Four Generations. In 1998 Japan hosted the most recent of these, with a touring exhibition to five major museums.

Phenomena Spectrum Guardian by Paul Jenkins (1923 - 2012) Acrylic on canvas 76 x 101.5 cm (29 ⁷/₈ x 40 inches) Signed lower middle Paul Jenkins Executed in 1970 Provenance: Gallerie Iris Wazzau, Davos, Switzerland Private collection, Cologne, Germany Artist biography: Born at Kansas City in Missouri (USA), the multi-media artist, poet and playwright Paul Jenkins studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York City. After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of his work springs from Jenkins’ wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes" influenced by ancient natural forms like the caves he visited in the Ozark Mountains in his native-Missouri. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters: Bellini, Holbein, Vermeer, Rembrandt, de la Tour, Turner and Goya. In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...

Provenance Steve Chase Design, Palm Springs, CA Ronnie Landfield was born in the Bronx, NY on January 9, 1947 - the same day as his older brother. As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York.
