Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 36"x28" Unframed: 29"x21" Provenance: Galerie Marcel Bernheim Exhibitied: Paris, Galerie Druet, March 1929, n°23 This work is included in the Archives Camoin and a certificate from Madame Grammont-Camoin is available on request Charles Camoin was the son of a paint manufacturer in Marseilles who died when Charles was six years old. His mother travelled extensively, absenting herself for long periods at a time, and Camoin's studies suffered accordingly. At 16, he enrolled at a commercial college in Marseilles, but also attended courses at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was awarded a first prize for drawing and composition. In 1896, at the age of 17 (or in 1898 according to other, possibly more reliable sources), Camoin moved to Paris where he was admitted to Gustave Moreau's class at the École des Beaux-Arts, shortly before the latter's death. He soon left on his travels in the company of Albert Marquet - no doubt following Moreau's advice to 'go and paint buses', his recommendation to the two artists to search out their subject matter on the streets and in the cabarets of Paris. During his short time in Moreau's class Camoin made a number of lasting friendships, notably with artists who would go on to pioneer Fauvism: Henry Manguin, Georges Roualt and, in particular, Jean Puy and Henri Matisse, with whom he exchanged letters on a regular basis.In 1900, Camoin did his military service, first in Arles, where he painted compositions inspired by Van Gogh motifs, then in 1902 in Aix, where he frequently met with Cézanne, with whom Camoin maintained a life-long correspondence and whose advice and counsel he cited repeatedly. In 1903, Camoin exhibited for the first time - at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Paris. The following year (1905), he met Claude Monet (at Cézanne's instigation and, appropriately perhaps, underneath Giverny's Nympheas); he then held his first solo exhibition at the Berthe Weill Gallery in Paris. In 1905, Camoin exhibited alongside the 'Animals' at that year's Salon d'Automne, although it must be said that he did not share the graphic and chromatic violence of a Matisse or a Derain...

This serene Scottish Impressionist Edwardian coastal landscape is by noted Scottish artist Joseph Morris Henderson. It was painted circa 1910 and entitled Tiree verso. Tiree is the most westerly island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland and one of the sunniest places in Scotland as well as midge fee due to the stiff breeze. Tiree is a very popular windsurfing venue and sometimes referred to as the Hawaii of the north. In most years, the Tiree World Classic surfing event is held here. The exact location of the painting is probably Vaul beach. Henderson has painted the view from one side of the large sweeping bay, so one looks across the beach to the opposite headland. His palette of light turquoise blues of the sea is just beautiful with the dramatic blusterly clouds above the sunny beach. The brushwork and impasto as just superb. This is a wonderful sunny Scottish coastal landscape and a superb example of Henderson's work. Signed lower right. Provenance. Signed and titled on T. & R. Annan & Sons, Ltd., Glasgow verso. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 24 inches by 18 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a frame that compliments the picture, 31 inches by 25 inches and also in excellent condition. Joseph Morris Henderson (1863-1936). Born in Glasgow, son of the artist Joseph Henderson by whom he was strongly influenced. Studied at Glasgow University and Glasgow School of Art. His style absorbed much from romantic Victorian realism and he dedicated himself to landscapes, seascapes and coastal scenes. He exhibited throughout his life primarily in Scotland. He was elected an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928 and a full member in 1935. He exhibited there from 1890 for nearly fifty years, exhibited approximately 80 paintings.

This artwork titled "Double Faces" c.1975 is an original color etching with aquatint on wove paper by American surrealist artist Michael Bowen, 1937-2009. It is hand signed with initials in pencil by the artist. The plate mark (image) size is 21.75 x 17.5 inches, sheet size is 29.25 x 20.75 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. About the subject: Nowhere is the intertwining of metaphysical, biographic and social narratives more evident than in the Café Life series painted in the 1980’s. Though the “series” was done in the 80’s, the pieces really revive the spirit of the Beat café scene, which began in the mid-1950’s and which was so instrumental to the particular spiritual and social vibe of the counter culture. And his Café Life observations continue over his artist life with scenes, such as the ones here, from Los Angles, Bolinas, Mexico and Italy. About the artist: Michael Bowen (December 8, 1937 – March 7, 2009) was an American fine artist known as one of the co-founders of the late 20th and 21st century Visionary art movements. His works include paintings on canvas and paper, 92 intaglio etchings based on Jungian psychology, assemblage, bronze sculpture, collage, and handmade art books. An icon of the American Beat Generation and the 1960s counterculture, Bowen is also known for his role in inspiring and organizing the first Human Be-In in San Francisco. Chronicled in books and periodicals reflecting on the turbulent 1960s, Bowen's historical impact on both the literary and visual art worlds is well documented. He remains influential among avant-garde art circles around the world. He started his art career at age 17, when he joined the American installation artist Ed Kienholz in his Los Angeles studio. There he met and joined with other influential Beat Generation artists including Wallace Berman, John Altoon, and Dennis Hopper. Bowen participated in the construction of the Ferus Gallery and Now Gallery created by Ed Kienholz and curated by Walter Hopps. Bowen attended the Chouinard Art Institute for several years during his formative artistic experiences in Los Angeles. In the late 50s and early 60s, Bowen continued his spiritual training and research. He investigated and practiced a variety of occult topics, Eastern philosophies, and mysticism, and his artwork reflected these themes. Bowen is often referred to as a mystic artist. As a lifelong student of the Bhagavad-Gita, Bowen's entire career has emulated the spiritual warrior archetype of Arjuna, fighting for the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution. Biography: Tony Minartz, pseudonym of Antoine Guillaume, born 8 April 1873 to Cannes and died in that city on 13 December 1944 Is a painter, draftsman , illustrator and engraver French. Painter autodidact , Tony Minartz starts to become known in 1896 by exhibiting paintings at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts , and then decorates the Pompadour theater of painted panels for fashion shows " Grand Guignol ", directed by L. Darthenay. In 1903, Henri Béraldi , with whom he worked, praised him in The Journal of ancient and modern art, writing that "it was thirty years ago," and he has received advice from Paul Renouard to be formed the technique of etching ; Béraldi adds that his favorite subjects are "Paris at night Paris at night, always." Minartz also gives them some high-remarkable in The Journal of ancient and modern art until 1910: balls, cafe concerts, Parisian in their most beautiful dresses, but also music-halls, music halls, restaurants, large and small theaters, are the preferred settings of his compositions.
