Richard Serra
STILL FROM HAND CATCHING LEAD by Richard Serra (image of hand)

2009

About the Item

Richard Serra (1939 - 2024) was one of the most important artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Serra experimented with sculpture, printmaking and video in pursuit of his investigations of the physicality of objects and their relationship to the human body. This is a lithograph and screen print on Hahnemuhle Copperplate Warm White Paper from the edition of 117 and was published as a benefit edition by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and printed at Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles and bears a blind stamp of authentication. The impression is in excellent condition and comes directly from Lincoln Center. The image is a still from 'Hand Catching Lead', 1968, Serra’s first feature film and depicts a hand attempting to catch pieces of lead seemingly dropped from the top of the frame. Lead, whether molten or rolled into sheets, was Serra's material of choice for much of the 1960’s and 70’s.
