Lovers and Idol

1988

About the Item

Lovers and Idol was featured on the cover of Harper’s Bazar in August, 1917, a very early work in Erte’s collaboration with the magazine. In his sculptural interpretation of that image, only the term ‘cinematics in bronze’ can describe this beautiful bronze’s full effect. It recreates that passionate moment when two lovers, embracing, are about to kiss. This golden and embellished sculpture draws attention from any angle and then pulls the eye around it, as if the eye were a camera recording the sensuous act from every perspective. An ancient and fierce-looking idol forms the platform and a counterpoint for the lovers. Catalogue - Erté: The Last Works (Dutton; pgs 141, 207) From the total edition of 412; numbered 134/375 (there were also 37 AP). The bronze sculpture/casting medium and process is, and has always played, a fascinating part in the history of art, admired by civilization for thousands of years and continuously developed with modern technology. Erté sculpture exemplifies the timeless beauty of this intriguing art form and manifests the artist’s personal unique flair in every bronze creation.
