Cecilia Vicuña Art
Chilean, b. 1947
Cecilia Vicuña is a Chilean artist, poet, filmmaker and activist. Her work addresses pressing concerns of the modern world, including ecological destruction, human rights and cultural homogenization. Born and raised in Santiago de Chile, she has been in exile since the early 1970s, after the military coup against elected president Salvador Allende. Her commitment to feminist forms and methodologies is considered to be a unifying theme across her diverse body of work.

Sol y dar y dad
By Cecilia Vicuña
Located in New York, NY
Visual poems, the works in Vicuña’s 'PALABRARmas' series are carefully attuned to the power of language. Many of these works incorporate wordplay, and throughout her practice, Vicuña treats words as embodied entities whose forms can be parsed to reveal subliminal meanings across a variety of languages.
For the series title, Vicuña has invented the word “palabrarmas,” a fusion of “palabra” (Spanish for “word”) and “armas” (“weapon”). At the same time, “palabrarmas” also suggests an even wider range of meanings, bearing similarities, for instance, to a portmanteau of the the verb “apalabrar” (“to agree on”), and the word “más” (more). Just as Vicuña emphasizes the capacity of words to cause violence and destruction, so she also suggests that they can be potent tools of reconciliation and understanding.
In 'Sol y dar y dad' (1974/2016), Vicuña again looks to language as she considers notions of truth and community, and she extracts from “solidaridad” (Spanish for “solidarity”) the word “sol” (“sun”) and the Spanish verb “dar” (“to give”).

Pencil signed, titled, dated and numbered 59/100 by Anne Craven on the front.
This print was created to celebrate the ICA's 75th anniversary.
Ann Craven has been making paintings of birds since the late 1990s, inspired by colour-plates found in her Italian grandmother’s vintage ornithology books. Like the moon the birds serve as a touchstone for memory, each repetition of the image a revisiting of a moment, a recalling of loved ones. Paintings of other animals, flowers, portraits of family and friends soon followed, in the same diaristic deployment.
For Craven, her bird paintings have totemic power: each is unique but each is also a stand-in for the people and scenarios she might have painted, were she a portrait painter. They embody memories, and offer a chance for the artist to covet her artistic history while encoding it with her current inner-life.
More about Anne Craven:
Ann Craven (b. 1967, Boston) makes self-reflexive paintings that comment on devotion, loss, and the immortalizing nature of her medium. Primarily using unabashedly high-key colors, she paints and repaints her key subjects—winsome animals and flowers modeled after those found in vintage books and postcards, among other sentimental twentieth-century sources, and the moon as observed by the artist herself. Craven’s emotional conceptualism inheres in these affectively charged repetitions, each of which is accompanied by an indexical canvas Palette used for the respective work’s color mixing and archived by the artist, like her Stripes, for her future reference. Eman si pasión [Emancipation / Participation]
By Cecilia Vicuña

Visual poems, the works in Vicuña’s PALABRARmas series are carefully attuned to the power of language. Just as Vicuña emphasizes the capacity of words to cause violence and destruction, so she also suggests that they can be potent tools of reconciliation and understanding. Here, in Eman si pasión [Emancipation / Participation] (1974/2016), Vicuña turns her attentions to the Spanish words “emancipación” (“emancipation”) and “participación” (“participation”), and she emphasizes their etymologically related verbs “emanar” (“to emanate”) and “partir” (“to share”). With a play on words, Vicuña’s silkscreen also breaks these words down into component parts, drawing phonetic similarities to the words “si” (“if) and “pasión” (“passion”).
