Hermann Corrodi Art

Italian, 1844-1905
Herman Corrodi was a Swiss Painter. He was the son of Salomon Corrodi. A New York Times obituary indicates that Hermann was born in Zurich, however his grave marker indicates that he was born in Frascati, which is near Rome. Corrodi studied at the Accademia di S. Luca under his father, Salomon Corrodi (1810–1892) and in Paris (1872). He received commissions for history paintings from the British royal family and was acquainted with most of the European royalty of the time, including a friendship with Queen Victoria and travelled widely in the Far East, including Egypt, Syria, Cyprus and Istanbul, which provided the subject for many of his paintings. He is the brother of Arnold Corrodi. Originally a landscape painter in the academic style, much of Hermann's work is also typical of the Orientalism style of the 19th century. In 1893 he was knighted 'Accademico di Merito' by the Accademia di San Luca, where he had been a professor. The father of the Hermann Corrodi came to Rome early in the last century and established himself here as a watercolour painter. Hermann, who has just died, was born In the little town of Frascati, 12 miles from Rome. He inherited the talent of his father, and every encouragement and assistance to the development of his artistic faculties were given him. Like several other Roman artists, he was gifted with eye-memory, certain effects in nature and certain Impressions of subjects and land scapes remained clearly pictured in his min from the age of 6 years, and 20 years afterward he painted what he considered one of his best pictures from an impression received at that early age. Like most other painters, Hermann Corrodi desired to study the works of contemporary painters In other countries. He, with his younger brother Arnold, was sent to Germany ; and they also passed some time with the painter Calame at Geneva. But it was in Paris that they felt themselves most benefited. There they were possessed with a great enthusiasm for the French school, and from this time onward there Is a complete change in their treatment of subjects and mode of work. Hermann became the painter of poetic landscapes. The Mediterranean, with its blue waters and sun-bleached shores, the life and motion and colour of processions in the little cities on religious festivals and views near Rome In the ever-changing, ever-beautiful Campagna, formed the choice subjects of Corrodi's brush.

Woman with Two Children in Red - Interior Scene in Oil on Canvas Lovely interior scene by notable artist Joseph Tomanek (Cech-American, 1889-1974). A woman sits near a window, holding a small child dressed in bright red in her lap. Another child, somewhat older, stands next to her, looking at the young child. Soft lights spills though the window, illuminating the scene in a warm glow. A plant with red flowers sits on the windowsill, and foliage can be seen outside. Signed "Tomanek" in the lower right corner (note that the shape above the signature is a toy train) Presented in a carved wood frame with a linen liner. Frame size: 30.75"H x 26.75"W Canvas size: 24"H x 20"W Tomanek, the son of a carpenter, was born in Moravia. His family discouraged his art talent and wanted him to be a shoemaker. He emigrated to America around the turn of the century and arrived in Chicago in 1910 and worked as an interior decorator. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and studied with Antonin Sterba. He also studied with Albert Krehbiel and K.A. Buehr. He was a member of the Bohemian Artist Club, Association of Chicago Painters, and Sculptors, and the Chicago Gallery Association. His work is included in the collection of the Vanderpoel Art Association (Chicago). He exhibited from the 1910s-40s, including exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Georgia Museum of Art. Of the difficulty of posing nudes in Chicago, he said, "In Paris you can rent little gardens studios and pose your models there in privacy. Here, if I work out of doors, I have to pose the girls in bathing suits...

Giovanni Battista Pittoni, Holy Family with Cupids, Venetian Baroque, Christmas
By Giovanni Battista Pittoni
Located in Greven, DE
In 2001 the German art historian Art historian and Raphael Expert, Prof. Jürg Meyer zur Capellen, published the painting "Die Heilige Familie" in a monographic article, ascribing the present work to the Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Pittoni (1687 -Venice - 1767). (Newspaper "Weltkunst", October 2001, No 12, p. 1850 f. ill.) He describes it as a typical work by this artist. Pittoni was one of the most influential and successful artists of the Venetian Settecento. He was a pupil of the Veronese Master Giovanni Balestra (1666-1740). His style is influenced by Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734) and Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770). Giovanni Battista Pittoni was already successful at a young age and soon lead his own workshop. He created large-scale hitoria paintings, as well as large, religious altarpieces. In addition to Venetian and Upper Italian patrons, Pittoni also had many interested parties from Europe. His work is accordingly scattered in many different museums and private collections today. Pittoni - like other painter colleagues of his time - repeated his own compositions both by hand and with the help of his workshop. He repeatedly incorporated details into other pictures and contexts. Prof. Meyer zur Capellen noted the very good condition of the present work and the high quality of the paint with fine graduations and the vivid brushstrokes. Provenance: The panting has not been on the art market for at least 300 years. In the year 2000 the work was donated by the Münster-based, Noble Family Ketteler zu Harkotten to a private collection in Westphalia. Most probably the canon Nikolaus Hermann von Ketteler zu Harkotten bought the piece in Venice in 1750 together with the altarpiece of the Clemens Church in Münster. On the reverse of the work is a fideicommissum number by Ketteler zu Harkotten. As it belonged to the family commission, the painting was inalienable until 1919, when the corresponding law was repealed, and after that time it remained in the family's possession without interruption. Pittoni's only direct relationship to Münster is the commission for the high altar painting of the Baroque St. Clemens Church. It can be assumed that then canon von Ketteler saw this painting in the artist's workshop during his stay in Venice and acquired it for himself. This would also explain the discrepancy in dating. (ca. 1735/1750). However, it is also possible that the painting originated in the possession of Ferdinand von Plettenberg...
