Poul Kjaerholm Very Rare Large Professor Desk

About the Item

An original Professor's desk from the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark. The tabletop is a continuous piece of plywood made from Oregon pine. A drawer also made from Oregon pine plywood hangs from the underside of the frame. Each outer surface of the wood is stained black. The simple frame of the desk is grey painted steel with rubber mounts. Poul Kjærholm designed two sizes of desk for the School of Architecture in 1955, one small and one large. The smaller table (140 x 85 x 69 cm) was for students whilst the larger for professors (both desks were made for the school with & without drawers). Unlike most of Kjærholm's designs, the students' and professor's desks were not assigned model numbers as they were not commercial designs. The desks were produced by cabinet maker Rudolf Rasmussen just for the school for which they were designed in 1955 (the same year Kjærholm began teaching at the school). Therefore, this desk and the few other surviving vintage examples were once a part of the interior of the school until circa 2002/3.

  • Pine & Brass Rødby Rådhus Desk by Ebbe & Karen Clemmensen, 1953
    By Karen & Ebbe Clemmensen
    Located in London, GB
A teak, Oregon pine, and brass desk, designed by Ebbe & Karen Clemmensen, in 1953 for the Rødby Rådhus (Town Hall), Denmark. The desk is in a late Classicist style, characterised by symmetrical design and simple ornamentation. Constructed with a pine kickboard, and a teak top, the legs finish with patinated brass shoes. The top is a slight trapezoid shape tapering at the front, originally to allow for serial desks to be attached resulting in a gentle crescent curve for a meeting room. A small circular recession, intended to be used to hold ashtrays, has its original petrol blue finish, popular with the two designers, and frequently used in their Copenhagen house constructed in the same year as this project. Today, this can be used to hold a pen pot...
