A Florentine Renaissance embroidered panel for a dalmatic garment, circa 1440-14

About the Item

A Florentine Renaissance embroidered panel for a dalmatic garment, circa 1440-1460 Comprising twelve sections, the top row with three Evangelists, each holding a gospel; the next row with the Annunciation scene with the Archangel Gabriel, Mary and Saint Paul holding a raised sword and a book; the next row with Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas flanking the standing figure of Jesus; the bottom row with Saint Peter holding keys and a book, Moses and probably Saint Andrew; each figure framed with embroidered foliage; sewn to a linen background stretched over a wooden frame. Backed on to a canvas and stretcher 32.3/8 x 18.1/2 in. (82.3 x 47 cm.), measured to edge of needlepoint, not stretcher. PROVENANCE: with Jean-Charles D'Ornano, 16 January 2022, lot 233. Ex central London gallery. Expertised by Dr Raffaele D’Amato. Condition: some losses and repairs. Many of the threads are metallic. Probably tarnished silver for much of it. A few loose threads, but it has been stabilised and is good and flat on the stretcher for presentation. No frame. There is fading to the panel as one should expect for something of this age.

  • Pair of 18th Century watercolour drawings by Old Master Carle Vernet
By Carle Vernet (Antoine Charles Horace Vernet)

Carle Vernet (French, 1758 – 1836) ‘La Marchande de Coco’; and ‘La Tour de Babbe d’un Charbonnier’ Ink, watercolour on paper Both signed C Vernet and Carle Vernet (lower left and lower right respectively) 12.1/4 x 9 in. (31 x 22.8 cm.) A pair Vernet was born in Bordeaux. At the age of five, he showed an extraordinary passion for drawing horses, but went through the regular academical course as a pupil of his father and of Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié. Strangely, after winning the grand prix (1782), he seemed to lose interest in the profession, and his father had to recall him back from Rome to France to prevent him from entering a monastery. In his Triumph of Aemilius Paulus, he broke with tradition and drew the horse with the forms he had learnt from nature in stables and riding-schools. His hunting-pieces, races, landscapes, and work as a lithographer were also very popular. Carle's sister was executed by the guillotine during the Revolution. After this, he gave up art. When he again began to produce under the French Directory (1795–1799), his style had changed radically. He started drawing in minute detail battles and campaigns to glorify Napoleon. His drawings of Napoleon...

  • Large Animal Wall Sculpture: 'Wormhole'
    By Gin Stone
    Located in New York, NY
'I am a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on ecofeminism using fiber and mixed media constructions. My materials include hand-dyed commercially fished line and ghost gear, recycled and antique textiles, fabric printed with cyanotype emulsions and found objects. I change the existing surface of recognizable animals by creating a veneer of unexpected color and imagery. This forces the viewer to consider the shape more carefully by visually exploring its new topography. The creation process can be likened to painting with fiber (that has been tinted with hand-mixed dyes) on a three-dimensional canvas. Intense work is spent creating the eyes and ears to convey the emotion of each animal. I look to the work of Joan Mitchell and The Quilters of Gee’s Bend as inspiration for pattern and color, as well as charts, iconography, and satellite imaging.' -Gin Stone...
