Alone at the Ferry

1880

About the Item

'Alone at the Ferry' is signed by British artist A.F. Patten (Alfred Fowler Patten 1826- 1889 or after). This is a fine oil on canvas painting of a young Victorian woman waiting for the Ferry. The figure is in exquisite detail against impressionist village and greenery. The painting derives additional significance from the attachment to a popular song at the time, 'The Ferry Man's young, and the sun going down' that is handwritten verso, along with the title of the painting. The line comes from the song Twickenham Ferry by Theo Marziels in 1878. The song also refers to a young a lady with a pink rose running late and trying to cross the Thams River in the Ferry. This song and the date of the painting would coincide with the time the popular song would have been well known. This painting may well depict a historic ferry crossing on the Thames that existed by the town of Twickenham. Patten is known for his figurative/portraiture artistry and landscape work, and this is a lovely example. From the detailed Victorian leather shoe to the roses on her bodice and in her hand, to the bonnet edging and red ribbon in curls of hair, the art is at once crisp and romantic. The canvas measures just over 28" high and 22" wide, with an ornate gilded frame, in the original period. The painting is in very good condition, with three tiny dots in the sky. The frame has small losses, retouched with gilt paint to blend, and is otherwise consistent with the age. With the frame the painting measures 39" high by 33" wide and three inches deep. This painting, with the song and location presents a story of its own, in addition to being a fine oil painting ready to hang!
