Abraham Hulk the Younger
Landscape Near Felday, Surrey

About the Item

Dutch/English artist Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922) is most known for landscapes of the British countryside. This work is one of a pair (the second work is also available by separate request) signed by the artist with a figure and cottage in the woods by a pond. While the work is of Surrey, the artist retains Dutch School Old Master elements in his work. Trained by his father, Abraham Hulk the Senior, the Younger chose landscapes over his father's preference for seascapes though he painted both scenes with masterful strokes, color and light. Hulk exhibited regularly in the London Royal Academy and with the Royal Society of British Artists. The figure of a woman is featured in this painting. His expertise in sky, water, trees and rural cottages are all present in this one work. This oil on canvas painting by a well known artist is presented in the likely original frame, and is the same frame in the paired work. Both are 27" by 22.2" in the frame, with the visible canvas being about 23" by 18.5". This painting is presented in very good order, with a minor loss to the frame, re-gilded by Saltire Gallerie. The paired painting will require inpainting of flaked off paint, but the quality of the work is also fine. Ornate gilt frame has age and patina. On the back of the painting the canvas is inscribed with the artist's name and the title of the work, Landscape in Felday, Surrey.
