Saint Jerome De Somer Paint Oil on canvas 17th Century Old master Flemish Art

1620-1650

About the Item

Hendrick de Somer, known as Enrico Fiammingo (Lokeren 1602 - Naples 1655) Saint Jerome penitent in the cave oil on canvas 103 x 130 cm. - In original period frame 123 x 152 cm. This superb Saint Jerome, among the most popular and recurring figures in seventeenth-century pictorial works, is a work of extraordinary visual impact, showing the Christian monk portrayed in the guise of a hermit kneeling in the act of praying in the dim light of a cave. The painting is undoubtedly indebted to the Neapolitan models of the early seventeenth century, and in particular the stylistic features highlight the reflections of Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), evident both in the choice of the subject and in the dramatic expressiveness of the elderly body. Compared to the great master, however, the canvas presents a softer pictorial approach compared to the dark and naturalistic tensions typical of his art, turning towards a neo-Venetian style of painting based on the expressive strength of colour. These considerations, combined with the descriptive attention to the face, suggest the attribution to Hendrick van Somer (1607 - 1656). The numerous paintings of certain authenticity present in private collections and in important public collections are a fundamental comparative term with this beautiful and sentimentally intense canvas. Among his known works there are three versions of Saint Jerome in the Desert, one in the Trafalgar Galleries in London from 1651, the other the superb Saint Jerome in the National Gallery of Palazzo Barberini in Rome signed and dated 1652, and also that of the Spada Gallery also in Rome. Our work shows Somer's complex language, with the Riberesque roots evident in the choice of the subject and the dramatic expressiveness of the old arm clearly highlighted. The Saint, with his slender body, all tense tendons and rigid bones, is placed in contrast with the large red drapery of the mantle that envelops him, alluding to his cardinal's dignity. The open book is his canonical iconographic attribute, referring to Jerome's fruitful activity as a scholar, biblical scholar and theologian, which made him the forerunner of the Renaissance humanist. Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Jacob De Wit (Amsterdam, 1695 - 1754) attributable/ workshop Pair of Cupids with Garland of Flowers Oil on canvas 91 x 103 cm. - Framed 104 x 115 cm. Provenance: Christie's (London, Old master Painting 12.12.1996) lot 82 This magnificent composition depicts two cupids holding a garland of flowers, placed on a fine architecture with bas-reliefs and masks, presumably the top of a fountain. One of the two cupids sympathetically holds a part of it with his hands, while his head turns towards the viewer; the second cupid, on the other hand, must have clumsily broken the thread holding its end, and is sitting sullenly with a torch and a tear streaking his chubby cheek. The work, given its stylistic features and compositional taste, can be attributed to the Flemish artist Jacob de Wit (Amsterdam, 1695 - 1754), or to an artist from his workshop, with his typical triumphal and opulent style, which reveals clear influences from Rubens and Van Dijck, but also from Gerard de Lairesse...

  • Christ Jesus Lama Religious Paint Oil on canvas 17/18 th Century Old master
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Giovan Battista Lama (Naples, 1673 - 1748) workshop Exaltation of the Holy Cross with the Symbols of the Passion oil on canvas 84 x 135 cm. - with frame 98 x 148 cm. The proposed painting is the work of a Neapolitan painter active at the beginning of the 18th century, although the composition betrays the influence of the Roman classicism prevailing at the end of the 17th century, discernible in the serene and casual atmosphere. This is a very interesting subject, namely the Exaltation of the Cross, a particular feast in Christian theology, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus with the particular aim of emphasising the centrality of the mystery of the cross. We see precisely Jesus, bowed in prayer in the company of an angel, while a host of angels above hold the most relevant symbols of his Passion (in Latin, arma Christi), namely the objects that were used for the crucifixion. These include, of course, the cross held by the major angel, and then the nails (three or four), the crown of thorns the lance with which Jesus was pierced, Veronica's veil (the linen cloth that St Veronica...

Titan Fine Art are pleased to present this charming bust-length portrait, which is a good example of the style of portrait painted in England in the second quarter of the seventeenth century. The attire consists of the finest silks, and the full billowing sleeves, bows, and hairstyle help in dating this portrait to circa 1637. The accessory par excellence – pearls – are worn as a necklace and were a very popular accessory. The artist makes no attempt to obey the rules of Baroque and instead sensitively depicts in complete honesty his sitter against a plain wall, and without distracting backdrops and flowing draperies – this work is very redolent of the sumptuous half-length female portraits that Cornelius Johnson...
