About the Item
Although a relatively small painting at just 6” x 8”, this charming scene by well-listed American artist Elisha Kent Kane Wetherill (1874-1929) has just the right amount of summer to please anyone who remembers those days at the shore. Wetherill used a soft impressionist palette to emphasis the location along the New England coast. A long run of wood steps leads down a steep embankment to a beach and boat landing. Vacationers are seen on the distant sand bar, likely at low tide. There are two sailboats plying the calm waters of the bay or river beyond.
Elisha Kent Kane Wetherill was born in Philadelphia in 1874 and attended the Pennsylvania Academy in the 1890’s and again from 1906-1909. He went on to study in Paris under James Abbott MacNeil Whistler. He was a member of the National Academy and the Salmagundi Club in New York. His small landscapes are prized for their quick but spot-on accomplishments. They seem to capture the day and are as fresh today as they were almost 100 years ago. They are often unsigned, as this one is.
The painting measures just over 6” x 8”, is oil on board, unsigned, but noted on the back with the date July 26, 1926. It is housed in what appears to be the original impressionist carved frame. The overall framed dimensions are 10” x 12”. The frame has a few very minor dings here and there, but together with the painting present beautifully and is ready to hang on the wall of your choice and enjoy.
