About the Item
This painting by listed French artist Marcel Goupy is a colorful rendering of a location likely in Southern France, but possibly Italy or Spain. Goupy chose a terrace overlooking a lake valley to showcase his ability to combine color, light and shadow. A stone or stucco church anchors the left side of the composition while a colorful landscape to the lake and distant hills completes the rest. A lone person on the terrace adds humanity and scale to the scene. His soft color palette is varied and features an array of blues, purples and pink in the bright summer sky. The church's bell tower, the landscape beyond and parts of the terrace are bathed in warm sunlight. Goupy used a late impressionist style and palette to create this work and as a result it is a very decorative and enjoyable painting.
This should be no surprise, coming from a talented artist who was a noted painter, ceramist and decorator of objects. Born in Paris in 1886, Goupy was trained as an architect but soon thereafter set up a design studio in Paris. He joined with Georges Rouard's Gallery in 1909 to produce painted art glass and ceramics. After exposure at several shows, the works became very popular and by 1929 Goupy became the artistic director for the gallery. His Art Deco designs became a favorite to collect, right up to today.
The painting is oil on wood panel and is signed with his noted signature, lower right, in red - ever in the decorative manner. The panel measures 13" x 17" and it is housed in a complementary gold frame of classic design. The overall framed dimensions are just over 16" x 20". Bothe painting and the frame are in very good condition and the work is ready to hang on the wall of your choice.
