Yves Brayer Drawings and Watercolor Paintings

French, 1907-1990

Yves Brayer stands among the most celebrated modern French painters. Although Brayer was faithful to the figurative tradition, his ample métier was enriched by his vision. Brayer’s oeuvre proved to be very diverse, for besides his well-known landscapes, he also painted vast canvases, portraits and still lifes. A lover of Mediterranean landscapes, Brayer sojourned in Morocco, Spain and Italy before settling down in Provence. There, Brayer was enchanted by the diverse and architectural forms of the Alpilles mountains and by the vast expanse of the Camargue region with its ubiquitous white horses and black bulls. From then on, Brayer spent several months each year working in Provence. Brayer also traveled internationally, where he was quick to grasp the unique rhythm and light of each country. When Brayer was in Paris in 1942, Jacques Rouché appointed Brayer costume-and-set designer for a ballet at the Opera de Paris. Brayer passed away in Paris in 1990. A large collection of his paintings are on permanent display both at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Cordes, France and at the Musée Yves Brayer in Les Baux de Provence, as well as many regional museums in his home country. In the United States, Brayer's works form part of the collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, among others.

Horses at the Edge of the Pond
By Yves Brayer
Located in London, GB
'Horses at the Edge of the Pond', pencil, ink and watercolour on art paper, by Yves Brayer (1980). Brayer loved the Camargue region of France and painted it widely. The Camargue is a vast, swampy delta near Arles, very exotic, with tall marsh grasses where pink flamingos, black bulls and white horses roam freely. This image depicts three horses in the Camargue near pond's edge. Although there are many horses that still run free in the area, there are cowboys — called gardians — who ride the white horses on the beaches...

By Yves Brayer
Located in London, GB
'Promenade of Horses at Auteuil Horse Track, Paris', watercolour on art paper, by Yves Brayer (circa 1960s). This historic horse track in the Bois de Boulogne was frequented by Ernest Hemingway. Having opened in 1873, Auteuil Racecourse is situated on the edge of Paris's Bois de Boulogne on a 33-hectare site. It is the centre of steeplechase racing in France. In this depiction, the artist captures a wonderful moment whereby the horse's coverings and the autumnal landscape fill the image with warming colour. The promenade is part of horse racing tradition and is held in the parade ring...

Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer
By Yves Brayer
Located in London, GB
'Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer', gouache on art paper, by Yves Brayer (circa 1950s). Acquired from the estate of actor Kirk Douglas and his wife, Anne Douglas (né Buydens), one must wonder how this particular French painting ended up in the home of the famous Hollywood star. Yves Brayer was known for his artworks depicting the landscapes, wildlife and people of the Camargue region of the South of France, near Arles. He painted this lively scene from the capital of the Camargue, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is particularly lively in summer with its visitors, beaches, cafés, restaurants and shops. In winter, another atmosphere prevails with its long and deserted sandy beaches, the sea air, and the gentle breaking of the waves. Every May, Romanies, Manouches, Tziganes and Gitans come from the four corners of Europe to venerate their Saint, the Black Sara. They camp on the streets, on the squares, on the beach. For ten days, they are at home. And it is in this region where the lives of...
