An oversized Agatewear ewer or water pitcher, from the ‘Agate’ toiletwares line in the ‘Pompiean’ shape, Copeland and Garrett, Spode - circa 1840. Copeland and Garrett operated from 1833-1847 in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Agateware vessels are made up of a white clay stained with metallic oxides to create a swirl of multi-colored clays. A large piece originally paired with a basin, molded with an applied handle, a flat-top crimped upper rim, and a footed base. This piece has an overall chocolate brown coloring mixed with ochre, along with small spots of light Cerulean blue. Marked: An applied, raised white pad mark reading Copeland Garrett. A rare and unusual antique English Staffordshire spill vase modeled as a dog saving a drowning boy and dating from the mid 19th century. The spill vase stands on an oval shaped base and portrays a large dog lifting a boy from a river abstractly created with a blue painted rough cast edge. The dog stands raised on a bank painted with floral sprigs and the dog has a black and white painted body with painted features with the spill vase as a tall standing trunk...

This massive and rare pitcher is fully decorated with the imagery and symbols of the Masons and Odd Fellows (see images). Odd Fellows promote philanthropy, the ethic of reciprocity, and charity. At the front of the pitcher, we see a panel with the words, "We are odd Fellows When we act and Do the thing which is Right." Around this panel are the words "How grand in Age How fair in Youth is Holly Friendship, Love and Truth." Above the panel is an open palm with a heart symbolic of charity given from the heart. On both sides of the pitcher is the motto, "Amicitia Amor et Veritas," which translates to Friendship, Love, and Truth.  The motto is accompanied by an image of Lady Justice and an angel holding a budding branch. Lady Justice personifies morality in judicial systems. The budding branch symbolizes the idea that truth can "draw freshness and verdure" from the "most barren facts and common things in life" and give them life and interest. Above all of this is a shining sun. As the sun shines on us all, it symbolizes impartiality in the benevolence of the Odd Fellows.  Dimensions: 9.75" tall x 8.25" diameter Condition: Very Good, with a little scratching, particularly to the lustered leaves, flowers, and the lustered top edge. Reference: From the 41st Regiment Military Living Group The original name of the Regiment was "Colonel Edmund Fielding's Regiment of Invalids", raised in 1719 from out-pensioners of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, for garrison duty "at home". On July 1, 1751, the Regiment was numbered 41st and redesignated as The 41st Regiment of Foot (or Invalids), with service confined mainly to the Portsmouth garrison, with detachments at Plymouth and Jersey.
