Walnut and Corian Gallery Bench Mid-Century Modern inspired Minimal Handmade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
This bench is composed of a Corian top floating on an elegantly detailed walnut frame. It is large enough for one's imagination or a group conversation. Spanning 7' long, it commands environments while subtly disappearing like its double miter joints that waterfall into the walnut grain. The bench is sawn from long hand-selected boards, carefully milled with a miter joint detail that cascades or 'waterfalls' a continuous grain from the seat down through the legs. To further accentuate the bench's slender span, we chose a double miter cut on the edge profile that almost makes the Bench's thickness at first glance disappear. The white-to-walnut bench refines the moment of repose. Its minimalism is as seductive as its touch to the senses. This bench is versatile and can just as easily define a vestibule or gallery window as it will sit aside a matching dining table. Finished in Tung oil it maintains a natural look and feel for the locally sourced black walnut. This item is available in custom sizes or finishes upon request. Due to natural materials used, the object received will be unique in material figuring and coloration. No item assembly or installation is necessary. Care for the object is minimal and can be conditioned every 2 years to maintain the original finish. All of our pieces are originally designed and handmade in the Brooklyn, NY based Figure+Ground studio; we don't believe in the separation of design and fabrication. Each item is handcrafted, serialized, and shipped with a “Certificate of Authenticity”, documenting its place in history. Own an original Figure+Ground Piece...

Pierre Paulin, Rare Sofa Model 442 for Artifort, 1962
Located in Paris, FR
Here is the two-seat model sofa from the 442 series designed by Pierre Paulin and manufactured by Artifort, Netherlands, 1962. Original Piece from the 1960s Newly re-upholstered in the traditional way by the best French craftsmen, we used a high quality wool Bouclé fabric from the French House Nobilis. Excellent condition. Biography - Pierre Paulin (1927-2009) Born in 1927 in Paris, Pierre Paulin is a French designer and interior designer. After studying at the Camondo School in Paris, with Maxime Old as a teacher, Pierre Paulin incorporated Marcel Gascoin’s studio in 1953. That same year, he exhibited his first designs which met a great success, at the “Salon des Arts Ménagers”. In 1954, Thonet France started to manufacture his creations. In 1959, Pierre Paulin began to work for the Dutch manufacturer Artifort, for whom he designed a range of bright colours, supple and curved shapes seats, upholstered with jersey. It was the beginning of a long and profitable collaboration that gave birth to many design icons. In 1967, he laid out Christian Dior’s office. In 1970, he started a collaboration with “Mobilier National” for whom he designed “Amphis” sofa, made out of three draught excluders built in and waving. Consecration came in 1971, when he took on the realisation of President Georges Pompidou’s private apartments at the Élysée Palace, assuring long-term recognition. François Mitterrand also drew on him in 1984, to conceive the interior design of his presidential office. Later, he renovated the dining room for the President Jacques Chirac. In 1975, he founded along with his wife the AD/SA agency, in which Roger Tallon associated in 1984. This company allowed them to work with great French firms such as Calor, Villeroy & Bosch, Citroën and SNCF and to arrange Paris-Gare de Lyon...

Loveseat Sofa by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani Italy, c 1970, Signed
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This newly reupholstered loveseat sofa by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, circa 1970s, features a graceful chrome frame with nubby white bouclé fabric. Signed with 1960s/ 1970s Sormani label as shown in photo gallery. *Note, we have the matching pair of club chairs available in another listing. The graceful frame shares a design quality with Cassina's LC2 / LC3 design by Le Corbusier, as they are 'buckets of cushions' in similar fashion and comfort. However this Sormani sofa features some unique subtle details, such as the slight "twist" in the rear legs (see photos). Signed with a Sormani label, this particular rare design is attributed to Claudio Salocchi. While there were several other famous designers who created works for Sormani in this time period, the style best matches Salocchi's work. For collectors looking for something unique and rare within a collection of 1960s/ 1970s Italian designs, this pair two-seater couch is an amazing opportunity. This Cassina LC2 / LC3 loveseat...

Antique, New and Vintage Loveseats

Antique and vintage loveseats are functional and totally charming furniture in homes large and small these days. They first appeared in the 17th and 18th centuries, though they were not yet known by this endearing term.

These petite, two-seat sofas were originally intended to comfortably sit a woman clad in what were the era’s large and elaborate dresses — ornate hooped garments with copious folds of fabric, embroidery and lace. However, because the original seats featured just enough space for two, they quickly became popular for couples that were courting. Loveseats meant that the couples could engage in close conversation, but furniture makers ensured that there was enough space between sitters to prioritize modesty.

In the early days of loveseats, the furnishings were minimalist in appearance and could often be found in an s-shape, with the two sides facing each other. The spare seating was initially little more than a wooden bench, as loveseats weren’t yet upholstered or cushioned. Design of the seating evolved over time, and this wide chair was eventually padded and tufted for comfort. During the 1800s, loveseats were a luxurious addition to the homes of the wealthy, and even today, antique 19th-century loveseats are still quite alluring. In any lavishly decorated parlor of the Victorian era, you might find a pair of partygoers tucked into a particularly plush iteration of these cozy perches, one boasting arched crests of carved mahogany over its sculpted seats, with front cabriole legs resolving in paw feet.

In modern homes, loveseats — even antique Victorian loveseats — pair well with oversize sofas or are ideal replacements for sofas, particularly if you’re working on organizing and furnishing a smaller space. A loveseat is a stylish addition to a home library or a reading nook and can easily be situated at the foot of the bed in your bedroom. In the living room, you may wish to position your vintage loveseat and couch around a central focal point, such as a distinguishing architectural feature or a fireplace. But be sure to leave some walking room between your seating and any nearby coffee tables or side tables. Allow for around two feet for guests to pass between a couch and chair or loveseat and at least a foot between a loveseat and coffee table.

Find a wide variety of antique, new and vintage loveseats today on 1stDibs.
