Henry Bernard Chalon (1770-1849) was an English artist celebrated for his exquisite animal portraits and romantic landscapes. Born in Switzerland, Chalon moved to England with his family in 1782. His passion for art led him to study at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where he honed his talent and developed a distinctive style.
Chalon's artistic career took off when he began illustrating for prestigious publications such as "Ackermann's Repository" and "The Sporting Magazine." His reputation as an animal painter grew, and he soon became known for his remarkable ability to capture the essence of animals with stunning realism.
Chalon's work was sought after by prominent figures of his time, including King George IV and William IV, for whom he painted hunting and racing scenes. His paintings often depicted horses, dogs, and other animals in action, evoking a sense of vitality and movement.
In addition to his animal portraits, Chalon was also known for his atmospheric landscapes, often featuring dramatic skies and serene countryside scenes. He frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy, where his work was well-received by both critics and the public.
Chalon's legacy lives on in his beautiful and evocative paintings, which continue to be admired and collected today. His ability to capture the spirit of animals and the beauty of nature makes him a cherished artist in the annals of art history.

- The Hunt Breaking coverBy Samuel Alken Jnr.Located in Stoke, HampshireSamuel Alken Jnr (1784-1825) The Hunt Breaking cover Signed 'S. Alken.' lower right Oil on canvas Canvas size - 24 x 36 in Framed size - 31 x 42 1/2 in Samuel Alken junior was the eldest son of Sporting artist Samuel Alken (1756-1815), he was born on April 10th. The family mostly became sporting artists, his younger brothers Henry Thomas (Ben Tally Ho), George and Sefferien. Little is known about his life, in his father's will he was the only son mentioned, but this was to leave him 1s., which presumably was a derogatory legacy perhaps because, as Shaw Sparrow suggests, he traded on his father's name, signing in the same manner. However, as he often signed quite clearly S. Alken Jnr one feels it unlikely, but it does imply S. Alken Snr also painted sporting pictures. There has always been great confusion over the Samuel Alkens and for a long time they were looked upon as one person. number of prints were published after Samuel Junior's work including a set of sixteen published in the early 1820's depicting various sports, including hunting, racing, shooting and fishing. In the works recorded by him, his style would seem closer to that of Barenger. A lot of small wooded shooting scenes...Category
