18th century

About the Item

The price is intended for the couple of paintings. Expertise by Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri. This pair of paintings by Giovanni Domenico Gambone (1720 – 1793) depicts an architectural capriccio with archaeological ruins and people who interact with each other. In one of the two artworks we can easily see a man on a horse speaking with two guards or soldiers who are resting on the steps of a ruined temple, while a woman who is carrying a tray with two glasses, is approaching. The two artworks are part of two painting genres; landscape painting and capriccio. A landscape with a lake or a river surrounded by hills acts as the background of ruined temples, such as an obelisk and a 16th-century palace which we can see in one of the two paintings.
