About the Item
Originally conceived as an abstract piece, this painting gradually morphed into a recognizable landscape scene. It depicts a landscape in an uncanny yet familiar setting, forming part of the artist's collection titled "Strange Terrain," conceived during the 2020 Covid lockdown. Reflecting the eerie atmosphere of those times, the landscape serves as a metaphor for the strange and unfamiliar. The title also alludes to ongoing environmental shifts and the intensity of significant moments in our world, portrayed through bold, exaggerated colors and heavy use of black.
Upon closer inspection, viewers will discern a curious amalgamation of climate zones, including patches of foliage, a nocturnal sky, a vivid yellow sun, glacial remnants, and icy mountains. The painting evolved over the course of approximately two months, with multiple sessions and layers of oil paint being applied, scraped down, and built back up.
Presented on sturdy 1.5" thick stretcher bars, the painting is signed on the back. The mock-up photo showcases a white frame, though framing options are available and can be included at no additional cost upon request.

Matt Higgins is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa. He received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from West Chester University. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His various bodies of work focus on themes of abstraction, the landscape and text based paintings. His work can be viewed as a constant progression, as well as a cycle from one body of work to the next. He often times returns to existing themes or motifs with a fresh outlook after departing for periods of time. Growth and learning is a significant part of the artists practice and this continued openness and exploration is what keeps his work fresh and original from one body of work to the next, never settling for predictability or the mundane.
