About the Item
The fourth in the Palm series by contemporary artist Matt Higgins.
Description of the body of work:
The artworks presented here depict palm-like plants in mostly nocturnal and enigmatic settings, often against mountainous backdrops and other elements of the landscape. Palms, resilient by nature, withstand high winds, extreme temperatures, and unpredictable weather conditions. The vibrant and dynamic foliage emanates energy and vitality. The upright trunk and expansive leaves convey a sense of life and vigor. The palm, positioned as the central subject matter, assumes an almost figurative presence within the space, symbolizing selfhood and the capacity to endure challenging circumstances while persisting through life. The textured surfaces of the paintings reflect a struggle to capture each image, a process marked by determination, experimentation and chance. Though initially inspired by reference photos, the scenes depicted evolve into a realm where the application of paint and surface take precedence over the actual scene itself. The series of paintings was influenced by the text “All Things Are Possible” by Lev Shestov, a book the artist frequently returns back to for inspiration and content. The paintings, created with oil on canvas using a blend of linseed oil and wax, undergo a transformative journey over time. They are reoriented, worked on upside down, scraped down, and rebuilt until reaching resolution, mirroring the artist's creative process of overcoming challenges and finding new forms of expression.
This piece will be professionally packaged and shipped in a heavy-duty cardboard box.

Matt Higgins is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa. He received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from West Chester University. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His various bodies of work focus on themes of abstraction, the landscape and text based paintings. His work can be viewed as a constant progression, as well as a cycle from one body of work to the next. He often times returns to existing themes or motifs with a fresh outlook after departing for periods of time. Growth and learning is a significant part of the artists practice and this continued openness and exploration is what keeps his work fresh and original from one body of work to the next, never settling for predictability or the mundane.
