Landscape Paint Oil on canvas 18th Century Old master Roma Italy River Water Art

1720-1780

About the Item

Roman landscape painter of the eighteenth century - Entourage by Paolo Anesi (Rome 1697 - 1773) River landscape of the Lazio countryside, with the Tiber flowing between some villages and a ruined arch II half XVIII century oil on canvas, (cm.) 37 x 54, framed x 55 x 62 The painting has characters clearly linked to the Roman landscape tradition of the eighteenth century and, in particular, to the works of Paolo Anesi (Rome 1697 - 1773), one of the most appreciated artists by travelers on the Grand Tour, especially English, as well as being in great demand for enrich the already important Capitoline collections. His stylistic imprint brilliantly combines the optical clarity of Van Wittel and Lint, with the tradition of the ideal landscape made famous by Van Bloemen. In Anesi, however, there is a 'romantic' sensibility, strengthened by a particular attention to luministic values, contiguous to the examples of Venetian landscape art disclosed by Marco Ricci and Francesco Zuccarelli. The ruins of a Roman arch contribute to identifying the territory in which we find ourselves, evoking the idea of the landscape that surrounds the city of Rome, and the course of the Tiber that marks the balanced overlapping of the perspective planes, which can be traveled by eye through the course of the river itself. The effect has a pleasant scenic impact, not only for the accuracy with which the landscape is described, but also for the skilful harmony of the chromatic and luministic counterpoints. The scenography, while respectful of reality, betrays a fantasy for atmospheric values capable of transfiguring the view, reproducing the atmospheric sensitivity of the air imbued with light, evoking a delicate Arcadian emotionality. The painting is in excellent condition, perfectly restored, accompanied by a pleasant golden frame. The work, like all our objects, is sold with a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law. For any information, do not hesitate to contact us.

Giovan Battista Lama (Naples, 1673 - 1748) workshop Exaltation of the Holy Cross with the Symbols of the Passion oil on canvas 84 x 135 cm. - with frame 98 x 148 cm. The proposed painting is the work of a Neapolitan painter active at the beginning of the 18th century, although the composition betrays the influence of the Roman classicism prevailing at the end of the 17th century, discernible in the serene and casual atmosphere. This is a very interesting subject, namely the Exaltation of the Cross, a particular feast in Christian theology, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus with the particular aim of emphasising the centrality of the mystery of the cross. We see precisely Jesus, bowed in prayer in the company of an angel, while a host of angels above hold the most relevant symbols of his Passion (in Latin, arma Christi), namely the objects that were used for the crucifixion. These include, of course, the cross held by the major angel, and then the nails (three or four), the crown of thorns the lance with which Jesus was pierced, Veronica's veil (the linen cloth that St Veronica...

  • Moses and the Pillar of Cloud by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Studio
    By Lucas Cranach the Elder
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Lucas Cranach the Elder and Studio 1472-1553 German Moses and the Pillar of Cloud Oil on panel Moses and the Pillar of Cloud is a bold and evocative composition that showcases the signature intense color and intricate detail of Lucas Cranach the Elder’s celebrated oeuvre. The remarkable 16th-century oil on panel by Lucas Cranach and his studio captures the narrative moment when Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt and encounters God manifested through a large pillar of cloud. Moses stands at the precipice of a bridge and turns back to soldiers helping to lead the group of Israelites who huddle closely together. Cranach depicts Moses with his traditional iconography, rendering the rays of light on his head which came to be interpreted as "horns" in the translation of the Bible. Using his traditional walking staff, Moses gestures toward the pillar, seemingly acknowledging that God will protect the group as they cross the bridge to the other side, leaving exile and entering a promised land. In a nod to Cranach’s Germanic locale, he renders the figures and setting in a manner that feels decisively more akin to European aesthetics than those of the Red Sea. Soldiers wear elaborate, gothic suits of armor that recall the livery of Northern European guardsmen. The terrain appears more like a European forest giving way to a sweeping valley than the arid landscape the Israelites trekked through on their journey across the Red Sea. Though still clearly recounting a story from the Old Testament, Cranach renders the cast of characters and setting in an earthly, familiar manner. This aesthetic shift speaks to Cranach’s own changing beliefs as he found himself at the center of the Protestant Reformation. After first gaining recognition in 1505 as the official painter of Frederick the Wise, Cranach established a thriving painting and print studio in Wittenberg, Germany. Cranach was renowned for his court portraits and genre paintings and was also well known for his association with the famous protestant reformer Martin Luther, then under the protection of Frederick the Wise. As Wittenberg became a bastion of new religious thought, Cranach soon befriended Luther and played an active role in creating the printed materials that proliferated throughout the Reformation...
