About the Item
Art Deco bronze blue bird bell sculpture by Edouard Marcel Sandoz. Bronze cubist bird figurine, circa 1920, finished in original dark brown/copper patinated bronze. Written on both edges, E.M. Sandoz also has the “S. Freres” signature and the foundry seal. Sandoz, with his profound body of work specializing in animals, this fun and unusual bronze gives a rather lyrical point of view you could expect from Sandoz. The bell has a rich-sounding ring.
Sandoz of Switzerland was most famous for being a sculptor of animals. His work is very sought after, very collectible, and extremely rare. He worked from the Art Nouveau period through Cubism and Art Deco. From 1891 to 1971, he was part of the famous Sandoz family. In addition to so much recognition for his work, known for bronze, porcelain, and silver, he also worked with Christofle and developed highly collectible pieces from the Galia collection. He was the son of a very successful businessman and could use his family resources, which certainly supported many of his creative endeavors.

Edouard-Marcel Sandoz
Born in Basle, educated in Switzerland, Edouard Marcel Sandoz worked mainly in Paris, where he settled in 1908. A sculptor of men and of animals, he expressed himself in bronze, in ceramic, and through the direct cutting of stone. A painter of flowers and of landscapes, he was also an unflagging producer of sketches and water-colours. His motto : “ In art, one has to love everything : nature, science, one's fellow man… ” His defining characteristics : intellectual curiosity and technical discipline. His freedom of expression was grounded in mastery of classical and traditional techniques, his knowledge of materials, the constant search for new tools, the opening up of new artistic territories, and the study and profound understanding of his subject-matter. His very personal style, developed in the course of a long career, bears the imprint of the Art Nouveau period, in which he was a forceful presence. The predominance of animalism in his sculptural work incited him to found the French Society of Animalists in 1933. His commitment to the service of his fellow artists led him to preside over the Baron Taylor Association for more than thirty years, to found the Charitable Society for Children of Artists, and to contribute to the creation of the Cité des Arts in Paris. In recognition of his talents and achievements, France elected him a Member of the Academy of Fine Arts, and appointed him to the rank of Commander both of the Legion of Honour and of the Order of Arts and Letters.

- Lucien Charles E. Alliot French Art Deco Bronze The Gazelles 1930By Lucien AlliotLocated in Oakland, CALucien Alliot French Art Deco Bronze The Gazelles 1930. The brown patina on a marble base signed on the bronze L Alliot and stamped bronze on the deer. This particular piece has exceptional rhythm where the two gazelles interplay in a movement depicting leaping over the hills or water—a very three-dimensional treatment showing the movement of the animals. Lucien Charles Eduoard Alliot (1877-1967), the sculptor, was born in 1877 Paris, France. His work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, was a member and the gold medal in 1920, out of competition, and was a member of the sculpture jury from 1934 to 1939. Alliot was well known for his figurative sculptures, exhibited at the Salon de Paris for many years. He received a third-place award in 1907 (which included funds for travel expenses) and a first-place award l in 1920. After he declared himself out of the artistic competition, he became a jury member at the Salon evaluating sculptural works from 1934 to 1939. Alliot created several allegorical groups, La Paix in 1939, and several religious illustrations: Sacré Cœur in 1924, La Vierge Marie...Category
