Edouard-Marcel Sandoz Art
Swiss, 1881-1971
Born in Basle, educated in Switzerland, Edouard Marcel Sandoz worked mainly in Paris, where he settled in 1908. A sculptor of men and of animals, he expressed himself in bronze, in ceramic, and through the direct cutting of stone. A painter of flowers and of landscapes, he was also an unflagging producer of sketches and water-colours.
His motto : “ In art, one has to love everything : nature, science, one's fellow man… ”
His defining characteristics : intellectual curiosity and technical discipline. His freedom of expression was grounded in mastery of classical and traditional techniques, his knowledge of materials, the constant search for new tools, the opening up of new artistic territories, and the study and profound understanding of his subject-matter.
His very personal style, developed in the course of a long career, bears the imprint of the Art Nouveau period, in which he was a forceful presence. The predominance of animalism in his sculptural work incited him to found the French Society of Animalists in 1933.
His commitment to the service of his fellow artists led him to preside over the Baron Taylor Association for more than thirty years, to found the Charitable Society for Children of Artists, and to contribute to the creation of the Cité des Arts in Paris.
In recognition of his talents and achievements, France elected him a Member of the Academy of Fine Arts, and appointed him to the rank of Commander both of the Legion of Honour and of the Order of Arts and Letters.(Biography provided by Bailly Gallery Geneva-Paris)

French Folk Art Hand Carved Painted Whimsical Childrens Cat Chair Gerard Rigot
Located in Surfside, FL
Gerard Rigot (France, 1929-)
Animeubles, Child's Chair
Circa, 1980's
Folk art, hand carved chair in the form of a cat.
Hand signed on bottom
Endorsed by the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris.
Dimensions: Measures 23" x 19" x 13"
The chair is made from softwood, probably pine, alder, ash, birch or hornbeam. It stands on four legs and has a simple D-shaped form. A carved cat’s head adorns the proper right arm, and an erect tail the proper left. The legs of the chair are shaped at the feet to resemble a cat’s paws. The whole chair is painted in simple, dilute oil colours, predominantly a soft red, with a green gray seat and blue-white stripes on the tail and body. The facial features are highlighted. The artist’s signature is painted in black on the underside of the seat.
Gerard Rigot was born in the suburbs of Paris in 1929, and began sculpting and painting whimsical fantastic wood furniture after moving to the countryside at the age of 49.
Before becoming a full-time artist in the late-1970s, Rigot had a varied career including stints as a soldier and a photography assistant, his practice being particularly influenced by a period he spent working as a teacher in Algeria. When the painter Gerard Rigot bought a farmhouse in Toulouse, France, he began to make furniture. Inspired by his cat and using native oak and pine, he carved and painted playfull naive animal...

Portrait of Julienne Lullier
By Demetre Chiparus
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Portrait of the artist’s wife.
Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (also known as Dumitru Chiparus) (16 September 1886 in Dorohoi, Romania - 22 January 1947 in Paris, France) was a Romanian Art Deco* era sculptor who lived and worked in Paris.
He was born in Romania, the son of Haralamb and Saveta. In 1909 he went to Italy, where he attended the classes of Italian sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912 he traveled to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts* to pursue his art at the classes of Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher.
Demetre Chiparus died in 1947 and was buried in Bagneux cemetery, just south of Paris.
The first sculptures of Chiparus were created in the realistic style and were exhibited at the Salon of 1914. He employed the combination of bronze and ivory, called chryselephantine*, to great effect. Most of his renowned works were made between 1914 and 1933. The first series of sculptures manufactured by Chiparus were the series of the children.
The mature style of Chiparus took shape beginning in the 1920s. His sculptures are remarkable for their bright and outstanding decorative effect. Dancers of the Russian Ballet, French theatre, and early motion pictures were among his more notable subjects and were typified by a long, slender, stylized appearance. His work was influenced by an interest in Egypt, after Pharaoh Tutankhamen's tomb was excavated.
He worked primarily with the Edmond Etling and Cie Foundry in Paris administrated by Julien Dreyfus. Les Neveux de J. Lehmann was the second foundry which constantly worked with Chiparus and produced the sculptures of his models.
Chiparus rarely exhibited at the Salon. In 1923 he showed his Javelin Thrower, and in 1928 exhibited his Ta-Keo dancer. During the period of Nazi persecution and the World War II, the foundries discontinued production of work by Chiparus. The economic situation of that time was not favorable to the development of decorative arts and circumstances for many sculptors worsened.
Since the early 1940s almost no works of Chiparus were sold, but he continued sculpting for his own pleasure, depicting animals in the Art Deco style. At the 1942 Paris Salon, the plaster sculptures Polar Bear...
