Maria Chiaromonte
Futurist abstract figurative plaster statue with religious theme

1950 about

About the Item

This plaster statue, depicting "the Annunciation," is a sketch for a bronze that the artist would exhibit between 1957 and 1960 at his solo shows at the Strozzina in Florence, the Cocchini Gallery in Livorno, Rome and Brescia. "She is not dominated by formalism as an end in itself" (M. VENTUROLI), "some are pieces of elegant workmanship, but others are absolute achievements" (G. ETNA), "an interesting sculptor that rarely happens to visit" (M. LANDI), "complete personality, intimately linked to the reality of her spirit and the power of creation" (R. MAZZARELLA), are just a few of the many positive comments that sculptor Maria Chiaromonte (until the 1940s also with the double surname Chiaromonte Fornari) has received in her short (as far as we know) career. There is very little biographical information about her, in fact, and it is mostly related to her artistic activity between the late 1930s and the mid-1950s, when she lived and lived in Rome. We find her as an assiduous attendee of the Quadriennali in Rome and the Venice Biennials, but also internationally, Zurich and Paris, receiving important public commissions and counting among her collectors members of the cultural elite and the upper echelons of government.
