Bernhard Heiliger Art
German, 1915-1995
Bernhard Heiliger (11 November 1915, Stettin - 26 October 1995, Berlin) was a German artist. He was considered "West Germany's foremost sculptor", and his large public artworks are a prominent presence in many German cities, especially Berlin.
Heiliger began his artistic education with an apprenticeship as a stone carver and a course of study at the Stettiner Werkschule für Gestaltende Arbeiten from 1933-36 under Kurt Schwerdtfeger, who had been a student of the Bauhaus. After this he attended the Staatlichen Hochschule für bildende Künste (National College of Visual Arts) in 1938, where he studied under Arno Breker. In 1941 he was drafted into the army and served as a radio operator on the Eastern Front for two years, before he received an exemption from military service through the intervention of Breker. Despite this he was drafted again in 1944, after which he fled as a deserter through northern Germany.
In May 1946 Heiliger exhibits with the painter Fritz Ascher at the Karl Buchholz Gallery in Berlin. Heiliger's design for the Memorial to Unknown Political Prisoners (1953) brought him his first international recognition, earning him the Prize of the National Government and a prize from the Institute of Contemporary Arts. This was followed by his participation in several prominent international exhibits, such as the documenta I & II in Kassel (1955 and 1959) and the Venice Biennale (1956), and by commissions such as sculptures for the German pavilion at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels. In 1956 he became a member of the Berlin Academy of Art. In 1974 he was recognized with the Federal Cross of Merit, and in 1984 was awarded an honorary membership in the Deutscher Künstlerbund.
He died in Berlin in 1995, and was buried in Berlin's Dahlem Cemetery (Friedhof Dahlem).
Heiliger's diverse output stretches from his early, organically abstracted figures to his late nonobjective, geometric abstractions. His early work (1945–1962), focuses on the human figure, which is treated in an organic style influenced by Aristide Maillol and Henry Moore. Also from this period is a series of portrait busts of prominent contemporary Germans. The artist departed from the human figure in his second period (1962–1970), instead developing imagery of the "flight of birds and vegetable forms"[4] influenced by the nonrepresentational Informel style. The seven-meter-high The Flame (Flamme, 1962–63), commissioned by the city of Berlin for Ernst-Reuter-Platz,[1] is considered the key work in the transition between the early and middle periods.[4] The Five Continents (Die fünf Erdteile, 1961), by contrast, still alludes to the human figure in the torso-like shapes that make up the composition. Michael Gross Israeli Minimalist Conceptual Art, Abstract Jerusalem Silkscreen
By Michael Gross
Located in Surfside, FL
Michael Gross (Hebrew: מיכאל גרוס; 1920 – 4 November 2004) was an Israeli painter, sculptor and conceptual artist.
Michael Gross was born in Tiberias in the British-administered Palestine in 1920. He grew up in the farming village of Migdal. In 1939-1940, he left to study at the Teachers’ Training College in Jerusalem. In 1939, while he was away, his father was murdered by Arabs, and the family farm and home were destroyed. This event impacted on his work as an artist.
From 1943 to 1945, he studied architecture at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. From 1951 to 1954, he studied art at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He returned to Israel in 1954 and settled in the artists’ village of Ein Hod.
Gross's works are imbued with the light and spirit. They are minimalist, but never pure abstraction, always tied to natural form and laden with feeling. In his early paintings, Gross simplified form in order to concentrate on proportion, broad areas of color, and the size and placement of each element. This reductive process was also notable in his sculptures, whether in painted iron or other materials such as white concrete. In later paintings, he often juxtaposed large off-white panels with patches of tone, adding textured materials such as wooden beams, burlap and rope. Gross’s rough, freely-brushed surfaces, along with the use of soft pastel coloring, conjure up images of the Israeli landscape.

From Here to There
Located in Surfside, FL
Will Petersen, a painter, master printer and a poet, was born in
Chicago. (Amer. 1928-1994)
Will's formal art education began with classes at the Chicago Academy
of Fine Arts. As a student at the city's Steinmetz High School,
Petersen succeeded Hugh Hefner (of Playboy magazine fame) as the HS
newspaper cartoonist, the Steinmetz Star. During this time, Petersen
recovered from polio.
In 1947 Petersen enrolled at Chicago's Wilbur Wright College. While
there, he painted with oils for the first time. Two years later he
enrolled at Michigan State University where he developed a strong
interest in literature and writing and began printmaking. By 1951 he
had begun to exhibit paintings and prints nationally. A year later he
completed his master's degree.
Petersen served in the United States Army from 1952-54, spending one
year as an education specialist in Japan. This encounter with the
Japanese culture affected his entire life. He became interested in
calligraphy and Noh, classical Japanese Buddhist performance that
combines elements of drama, music and poetry. Upon completion of his
military service in Japan in 1955, Will Petersen settled in Oakland,
California, where he met some of the most active poets of the Beat
Generation: Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Phil Whalen,
Mike McClure and others. Petersen was attracted to the group by their
intelligence and belief in Zen Buddhism.
In 1956 in his small studio in Oakland, he printed the poems of Jack
Kerouac. He attended for the first time, the reading of Ginsberg's
Howl at Six Gallery. His relationship with Gary Snyder had begun when
both were in Kyoto, Japan; later Snyder wrote for the Plucked Chicken.
Petersen returned to Japan in 1957, pursuing painting, printmaking and
writing for eight years while living in Kyoto. In 1965 he accepted a
faculty appointment at Ohio State University, teaching drawing,
painting and printmaking. Four years later Petersen took his teaching
skills to West Virginia University in Morgantown, where he
concentrated on printmaking. He taught there until 1977 when he began
publishing Plucked Chicken, a journal of art and poetry. In 1978 in
Morgantown, Petersen and his wife, Cynthia Archer, established Plucked
Chicken Press, which they later moved to Chicago and then Evanston.
Petersen operated the Press until his death on April 1, 1994.
1956 In storefront studio in Oakland, California, creates signed serigraphs
and lithographs. Prints poems of Jack Kerouac.
1961 Back in Japan, acquires a lithography press and stones and
resumes printing lithographs. Exhibits regularly with Kyoto
Printmakers.
1969 Resident lithographer at the Lakeside Studio, Lakeside, Michigan.
Prints for the first time Richard Hunt lithographs.
1978 Establishes Plucked Chicken Press in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Resident lithographer at Lakeside Studio in Michigan.
1980 Plucked Chicken Press moves to Chicago. Publishes lithographs by
Don Crouch and Art Kleinman.
