Børge Mogensen Furniture

Danish, 1914-1972

Among the great mid-20th century Danish furniture designers, Børge Mogensen distinguished himself with his faith to traditional values of craftsmanship and honesty of materials.

While peers such as Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen designed some of the most striking and now iconic furnishings of the era, Mogensen focused on making pieces that were simple, durable and comfortable — and in the long run perhaps more useful and better loved.

Mogensen studied under and later worked for Kaare Klint, a master cabinetmaker whose chief tenets were quality of construction and simplicity of line. Klint was a classicist, who believed that furniture forms should evolve from those of historical models. So, too, in his way was Mogensen, as two of his best-known earlier pieces attest. His 1945 Spokeback Sofa, with hinged arms that can be lowered to facilitate lounging, is a reinterpretation of the venerable Knole settee. With the oval silhouette of its plywood backrest and waterdrop-shaped cutouts, Mogenson’s Shell chair, designed in 1949, can be seen as a novel take on early 19th century Empire side chairs.

Yet Mogensen shared the aesthetical sensibilities of his most forward-looking colleagues. His cabinets deploy the same spare geometries and lushly figured woods as those of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his disciple Florence Knoll, the chief difference being that Mies and Knoll used chrome steel for the frames and legs of their pieces. The brawny oak frames and slung leather seats and backrests of Mogensen’s Hunting chair (1950) and Spanish chair (1958) display the same hefty construction and appreciation of natural materials seen in the work of Charlotte Perriand and Sergio Rodrigues.

As you will see from the furnishings on 1stDibs, Børge Mogensen designed for function more than sculptural effect. While his chairs may not be the first pieces in a décor to draw the eye, they are often the first to draw in those looking for a comfortable seat.

By Børge Mogensen
Located in Madrid, ES
Model "C18" Pine Shaker Table by Börge Mogensen for Karl Andersson & Söner. Sweden, 1970s. A pioneer in rationalist design, Børge Mogensen was known as ‘the people’s designer’ – partly due to his engaging personality, but also because he always designed quality furniture that was within people’s reach. He was a follower of Kaare Klint, for whom he worked after graduating the danish school of art. Later in 1950 he began his own studio creating a fantastic range of simple-lines and affordable, yet elegant and refined furniture.

Børge Mogensen Oak Daybed "Model 190" for Fredericia, Denmark 1950s
By Fredericia, Børge Mogensen
Located in Utrecht, NL
Børge Mogensen designed for function more than sculptural effect. Daybed Model 190 was designed in 1954 for Fredericia Furniture and shows Mogensen’s strong design ideals putting functionality and longevity first. Among the great mid-20th century Danish furniture designers, Børge Mogensen distinguished himself with his faith in traditional values of craftsmanship and honesty of materials. He focused on making pieces that were simple, durable and comfortable, while his chief tenets were quality of construction and simplicity of line. Even though he was a classicist, who believed that furniture forms should evolve from those of historical models, Mogensen shared the aesthetical sensibilities of his most forward-looking colleagues. This daybed has a simple look with understated elegance executed from high-quality materials. The solid oak construction stands on four round, tapered legs and has a lamella top with an upholstered mattress on it. Since the aesthetic is dominated by straight lines, the mattress has button tufting to bring depth into the appearance and accentuate the light coloured fabric. Paired with the blonde oak, the result is elegant and timeless, an aesthetic that can easily complement any style. Danish furniture maker Fredericia Stolefabrik was founded in 1911 by N. P. Ravnsø in an industrial port town of the same name. From the start, Ravnsø built Fredericia's reputation on quality and hired only the most skilled craftsmen he could find. In 1955, the Ravnsø family sold Fredericia to Andreas Graversen, whose first order of business would be to hire Børge Mogensen as head of design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The mattress has been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 76.37 in W x 32.87 in D x 10.82 in H (excl. mattress) 194 cm W x 83.5 cm D x 27.5 cm H (excl. mattress) About the designer: Børge Mogensen is without a doubt one of the most famous Danish designers. Born in 1914 in Aalborg, Mogensen was trained as a cabinetmaker and studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936 to 1938, and architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture between 1938 and 1942. At the beginning of his career, he became head of F.D.B. Mobler’s furniture design studio. In 1950, he started his own design studio, collaborating with manufacturers Soborg, the Swedish company Karl Andersson and the famous manufacturer Fredericia from 1955. The collaboration with the latter resulted in many of Mogensen’s most famous furniture pieces, including the “Spanish Chair” and the “Ambassador Sofa...

Two Bookcases by Børge Mogensen for C. M. Madsen, Denmark, 1950s
By Børge Mogensen, C.M. Madsen
Located in Utrecht, NL
These impressive bookcases designed by Børge Mogensen reflect the Danish designer’s aesthetic that was clean and highly functional, creating pieces that stand out despite their restrained design. The pair is made of solid wood with a beautiful woodgrain that is visible throughout the bodies. The shelves are all easily adjustable and removable. Each bookcase features five adjustable shelves, a feature of functionality. The shelves can be arranged in multiple ways to accommodate books or other objects of various sizes, and thanks to the open front, these bookcases are perfect to showcase any item. Both bookcases stand sturdily on the distinctively sculpted, black lacquered wood legs. The subtle geometry of the base and the colour blocking legs add modernism to the design while also balancing out the heaviness of the body. Børge Mogensen’s present design for C. M. Madsen Cabinetmakers Denmark was manufactured by the Danish company, FDB Møbler. Both bookcases are stamped with the cabinetmaker's mark and production number on their backs. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Both items have some discolouration and a later made (cable) hole that has been restored by a piece of coloured plywood. Dimensions: 48.03 in W x 10.23 in D x 62.59 in H 122 cm W x 26 cm D x 159 cm H About the Designer: Børge Mogensen is without a doubt one of the most famous Danish designers.
