Born in New Jersey, Nicholson moved to Philadelphia in the 1860s to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and to pursue his career as an artist. Nicholson traveled abroad in 1866, visiting France and studying with artist Eugene Isabey, before continuing his travels around Europe and into Egypt. Nicholson was a skilled engraver and a muralist along with being a landscape and marine painter.
